Freedom from Entanglement - Part 3

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in conclusion of the transcription of the nectarean class given by our beloved Spiritual master, HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 4.7.15. In the previous offering we heard the following points from Maharaj.

1. In reverse or miserable situations, we should not blame others but blame ourselves.
2. Never think anything inauspicious for others.

Now let us continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 4.8.17.

3. No counteraction is the best counteraction: In the last line of Srimad Bhagavatam verse 4.8.17, Suniti gives us an instruction as to why we should not think inauspicious for others. bhuṅkte jano yat para-duḥkhadas tat - Those who try to inflict miseries upon others, they suffer from that misery till you don't retaliate or speak at all. When you tolerate the words or whatever actions are, then that persons who try to inflict misery upon us, he suffers. But as soon as you try to retaliate  or counteract, he stops suffering and you suffer. So please remember this. Why to stop his suffering? Let him suffer (laugher).  This is the way to behave in this world. Never retaliate. Never. Just quietly tolerate. Being envious or whatever it is, people will definitely try to inflict miseries upon you. It is adhibhautik duḥkha. How can we stop this? Srila Prabhupada said many times that there are eight million four hundred thousand different species of existence, material bodies. We belong to one species. So eight million four hundred thousand minus one species, will inflict misery upon you (laughter). So how can we stop? It is impossible. So that which is impossible, why we should try? We should not try. That is the instruction of Suniti. Please, please, please. remember this.

Daksha retaliated immediately. Daksha could have very well tolerated, because he is older one, being father-in-law of Shiva. He could have just ignored the insult. amāninā māna-dena. Instead of ignoring the insult, he flared up and see the horrible result. That Sati had to quit the body. This is the result of not tolerating the insult. If you don't tolerate the insult, we don't really know what result will be there. Daksha did not think about it all. He said, "I am father-in-law of Siva and he must stand up. When the whole assembly stands up, why this rascal is not standing?" He didn't know that that rascal is his own son-in-law. Son-in-laws must always be glorified, otherwise the daughter is in trouble. (laughter) If at all somebody throws the arrows at us, then bhuṅkte jano yat para-duḥkhadas tat, this is how we should behave. Let him suffer. If you retaliate, you will suffer. Why should you take the suffering? This is the same way to get out of the situation. And unless we understand this very clearly, it is very difficult to behave sanely in these situations. Suniti gives us the morality. And apart from this morality, she convinces us very correctly that man or woman who try to inflict misery on you, they have to suffer, till you retaliate. So if we don't retaliate, they suffer. This is the best way to get out of the situation and nobody can blame you.

If you tolerate, nobody can blame you. Krishna stands on the altar and when the dacoit comes, murderer comes, saint comes, small boy comes, He knows that these are all rascals and even then He smiles at everybody. And then we suffer for our mistakes. He is not telling us anything, but then we start thinking, 'We should not do this mistake.' This is how He suggests from within our heart. Outside, He doesn't do anything at all, because he knows that bhuṅkte jano yat para-duḥkhadas tat. This is the eternal principle from Srimad Bhagavatam. This should guide us throughout our life, like the light-house. On the sea-coast there are light-houses and the light goes on revolving. In our lifetime, throughout our life, this should be the lighthouse - that bhuṅkte jano yat para-duḥkhadas tat. And the result is that, if we follow this instruction, then we will not get entangled in any situation. And whoever does anything, they will have to suffer the reactions of their karma. This is how we can escape. Daksha could have very well escaped from the situation and saved his own daughter. But because he didn't tolerate, see the horrible result! He had to lose the daughter, his own head. His head was transplanted with goat's head. Beautiful transplantation. (laughter) Don't think that we are only transplanting now. They had transplantation even millions of years ago. And after getting the goat's head, then he has come to the senses. He could have come to the senses in the beginning itself, before losing his own daughter and before losing his own head. The situation could have been very well tolerated and he could have saved himself from the situation completely. Or to be more precise, because he was on the bodily platform, he behaved in a certain way and the result was very horrible. Then he came to his senses and prayed to Lord Siva.

HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj Gurudev ki Jai ! Srila Prabhupada ki Jai ! Our heartfelt thanks to Maharaj for these practical though provoking useful instructions. We pray at his lotus feet for strength to follow these instructions.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
