Gratitude - Part 1

Gratitude - Part 1

Sudarshana devi dasi

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

On the eve of new year, we were blessed with the good association of our Godbrother HG Viraja Krishna Prabhuji from Brisbane. Prabhuji shared with us a very beautiful verse from Srimad Bhagavatam - verse 12.6.2. His class reminded us of our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj very much as Prabhuji was making all of us in the class recite and memorise the verse - similar to how Maharaj does. The following is humble effort to transcribe Prabhuji's class for the pleasure of all.

"We will recite and meditate on this verse line by line. This verse is all about gratitude. Whatever we are now is all because of the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada and our Guru Maharaj and many other devotees along the way in our life have helped us. And it is important that day in and day out we express our gratitude to each and every living entity who has helped us in this path of devotional service. We will do this in a traditional way. So please don't use your mobile phone. Please use the book to learn. If you don't have the book, please write it down in a piece of paper, but later on try not to look at the paper. Thats the way Maharaj actually would like us to do. He always insisted that we should give some exercise to our intelligence given to us. Otherwise we will get distracted.

siddho 'smy anugrhito 'smi / bhavataa karunaatmanaa
shraavito yac ca me saakshaad / anaadi-nidhano harih

raaja uvaaca—King Parikshit said; siddhah—fully successful; asmi—I am; anugrhitah—shown great mercy; asmi—I am; bhavataa—by your good self; karunaa-aatmanaa—who are full of mercy; shraavitah—has been described aurally; yat—because; ca—and; me—to me; saakshaat—directly; anaadi—who has no beginning; nidhanah—or end; harih—the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Maharaja Parikshit said: "I have now achieved the purpose of my life, because a great and merciful soul like you has shown such kindness to me. You have personally spoken to me this narration of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, who is without beginning or end."

(After reading out the word-to-word equivalents, translation, Prabhuji made all of us recite the verse line by line - without looking at the verse. All devotees - right from small child to elderly devotees recited the verse with enthusiasm)

This is real shrnvan, supatan and vichaarana - This will make us hear attentively. siddhah - in the word to word equivalents - the meaning is given as "fully successful". What is the other meaning of siddhah ? (Devotees replied - "perfection"). So who is saying this verse? Parikshit Maharaj is saying - "I am fully successful." When we say this, "I am fully successful", and keep a full stop after that, then it will be a symptom of pride. But Parikshit Maharaj is completely devoid of pride. He has no pride at all. And so he gives full credit to Sukadev Goswami that, "it is all due to your anugraha - your mercy." Thats why he says - "anugrhito 'smi".

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Prabhuji in the subsequent offerings.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
