Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous topic "Attentive Hearing" wherein we saw Parikshit Maharaj expressing his eagerness to hear more about Krishna from Sukadev Goswami and how he was not experiencing any fatigue though he had been fasting from food and water.

Pleased by the enthusiasm of the great devotee Maharaj Parikshit, Sukadev Goswami thanked him and appreciated his attentive hearing of Krishna katha. He says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.1.15

shri-suka uvaaca
samyag vyavasitaa buddhis / tava raajarshi-sattama
vaasudeva-kathaayaam te / yaj jaataa naishthiki ratih

Srila Sukadeva Gosvami said: "O Your Majesty, best of all saintly kings, because you are greatly attracted to topics of Vasudeva, it is certain that your intelligence is firmly fixed in spiritual understanding, which is the only true goal for humanity. Because that attraction is unceasing, it is certainly sublime."

The word "rajarshi-sattama" is used to address Maharaj Parikshit who was best among the saintly kings. When he knew that he had only 7 more days to live, as a responsible king, he immediately handed over all his duties to his son. Due to his saintly nature, he neither retaliated to the curse given by Shrngi, nor did he request Shamika rshi to nullify it. On the other hand he humbly repented for his offence of putting the dead-snake over Shamika rshi and considered the curse as apt punishment for his misdeed and gracefully accepted it. Also instead of spending the remaining days lavishly enjoying the royal comforts, he went to the bank of Ganges and vowed to fast until death. He sought the advice of sages and by Krishna's grace he met Sukadev Goswami there, who kindly agreed to recite Bhagavatam during those days.

Many a times we see that when we begin some service, we show lot of enthusiasm to do it - but with time the enthusiasm goes away. This is because of our impure motives and contamination with modes of nature. Even on days when we fast, our energy levels and enthusiasm remains high in the morning and decreases during the day - if we are not properly engaging ourselves in Krishna's service or Krishna katha. In case of Parikshit Maharaj's eagerness to hear Krishna-katha increased day by day. His ratih or attraction to Krishna katha was naishtiki - never ending. So Sukadev Goswami appreciated that such attentive hearing is very sublime.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
