Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Today we find many people affected by depression. At least few decades ago - depression was impacting only elders - but now-a-days with increase in competition spirit and peer pressures, we find even small children are subjected to depression and anxiety. Scriptures like Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita teaches us how to be cheerful and also make others cheerful. Krishna Himself reveals  the secret formula in Bhagavad Gita verse 10.9

mac-cittaa mad-gata-praanaa / bodhayantah parasparam
kathayantash ca maam nityam / tushanti ca ramanti ca

"The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me."

So glorification of the Supreme Lord is the only medicine and this holds true for people of all ages in the society. When Srila Vyasadev was despondent Narada Muni also gives this same instruction to him, asking to glorify the Lord through Srimad Bhagavatam. In verse 1.5.40, he makes it clear by saying, "Please, therefore, describe the Almighty Lord's activities which you have learned by your vast knowledge of the Vedas, for that will satisfy the hankerings of great learned men and at the same time mitigate the miseries of the masses of common people who are always suffering from material pangs. Indeed, there is no other way to get out of such miseries."

Narada Muni has shown this by his own personal example. In Srimad Bhagavatam 1.6.38 Suta Goswami glorifies how Narada Muni vibrates his transcendental veena and always glorifies the Lord and by doing so he enlivens all the people whom he meets.

aho devarshir dhanyo 'yam / yat keertim shaarnga dhanvanah
gaayan maadyan idam tantryaa / ramayaty aaturam jagat

"All glory and success to Srila Narada Muni because he glorifies the activities of the Personality of Godhead, and so doing he himself takes pleasure and also enlivens all the distressed souls of the universe."

The transcendental veena was gifted by Lord Krishna to Narada Muni and he made the best use of it by always utilising it in glorifying Krishna. The word 'ramayaty' in the above verse is translated as "enlivens". Without glorification of the Lord we are all as good as dead bodies. Bhagavatam says that glorification of Lord enlivens not only the speaker and the inquirer - but it also enlivens the silent hearers. Any time if we feel despondent, it is only because we have not genuinely, honestly given our best efforts and time in glorifying Krishna. When one engages his body mind and words 100% in Lord glorification, then he/she will be completely satisfied and will not hanker for any benediction.

When Lord Narasimhadev asked Prahlad Maharaj to take benedictions from Him, Prahlad Maharaj says that he is always happy and not in need of any benediction. He says in Srimad Bhagavatam 7.9.43 that the secret of His satisfied blissful nature is - "tvad veerya gaayana-mahaamrta-magna-cittah" - His mind is immersed in the nectarean ocean of spiritual bliss as he is always engaged in chanting and distributing the glories of the Lord.

May we always remember and follow the words of the great devotees and save ourselves from the demon of depression.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
