Simplicity - Part 4

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

This is in continuation of the transcription based on the wonderful class given by HG Vaijayantimala Mathaji. In the previous mails we saw the following qualities of a simple person.

We saw 11 qualities of a simple person in our previous offerings. Let us continue with other qualities of a simple person.

12. A simple person is easily accessible: Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead says, "I am easily available in my Holy names." In Sikshashtakam, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu says that Krishna has invested all His energies in the Holy name and He says it can be chanted anytime and anywhere. There is no niyama. When our child calls us even in the midnight we don't feel irritated. Just like our father and mother are so accessible, Krishna our Supreme Father is also easily accessible. When Gajendra called Him, He did not think that only an elephant is calling and let Me take My own time. We always have the feeling that if we are so accessible, people will not respect us. For this reason whenever there is meeting we try to go 10 minutes late. We want everybody to wait for us. But in case of Krishna when Gajendra called Him, He became so much more anxious than Gajendra. That time someone came and offered golden slippers with precious stones, but Krishna was in a hurry, so he just refused to take that offering. He did not even decorate Himself and He just sat on the back of Garuda and made Garuda to move fast. In Padyavali, written by Rupa Goswami, verse 50 says bhagavatas tvaraayai namah - "I offer my respectful obeisances to Your speed." When Draupadi called Krishna, He was there immediately. Krishna is always available to everybody as soon as we call out to Him with great earnestness.

Our Guru Maharaj is a pure devotee of the Lord. He had so many disciples all over the world and so many things to take care. But he had not kept a secretary. Whenever we call him he will pick up the phone and talk to us personally. This is what made everyone get attracted to him. We have to make ourselves easily available to anybody at any point of time. A person should not be afraid to come to us. Maharaj would often say, "Unless we are easily available how can we extend our helping hand to other living entities?"

13. A simple person does not blame others: A simple person blames himself. The moment we blame ourselves, so much time is saved. If we start pointing out the mistakes of others, then it becomes a big Kurukshetra. Maharaj says the moment we accept and take the blame on ourselves, all the material things get cut short and everything becomes peaceful, then we can concentrate on devotional service. In Ramayana, Bharata for no mistake of him was blamed by everybody. He was even blamed by Vasishta. Dasaratha also told that Bharata should not do funeral rights for him. But Bharata thought it all happened because of his own sin. He did not blame Kaikeyi, Manthra or King Dasaratha. Bharata was so simple that he put the blame on himself. In this way, the moment we stop blaming others and start blaming ourselves, then all our time is completely saved.

14. A simple person has no duplicity: This is the perfect formula for our health. Bhagavatam says that the medicine which gives improvement to our health is called rasaayanam. In that way we had soukya rasaayanam meaning which makes us happy and healthy. That rasaayanam is,

manasyekam vacasyekam karmaṇyekam mahātmanām
manasyanyat vacasyanyat karmaṇyanyat durātmanām

Our thought, our speech and our action should be same. Then we become Mahatma. If we think one thing, we speak one thing and act one thing, then we become duratma.

It doesn't mean we think all nonsense and act accordingly. We should think according to the scriptures. Then we will be healthy. Srimad Bhagavatam 11.9.4 says ,

dvāv eva cintayā muktau paramānanda āplutau
yo vimugdho jaḍo bālo yo guṇebhyaḥ paraṁ gataḥ

In this world two types of people are free from all anxiety and merged in great happiness: one who is a retarded and childish fool and one who has approached the Supreme Lord, who is beyond the three modes of material nature.

Maharaj says, "If we say any lie, our blood flow is affected and we end up with so many heart problems. We have to be innocent like children. Then we become healthy and happy."

15. A simple person is grateful: We should always be grateful - krtajna. Always we have to remember the good things done to us. If we remember that then we will become a grateful person. We should be grateful to our spiritual master, parents, neighbours, relatives, friends and the devotees who brought us to the spiritual platform. When we are grateful we don't exploit the other living entities or grab anything from them. One day when Krishna's finger was cut, Draupadi took small piece of cloth from her sari and tied the finger. Krishna showed His gratitude by supplying 999 saris when she was disrobed in the assembly. Our attitude should always be how to give it back. Krishna was always full of gratitude. Even when He was leaving for His abode, Krishna says, "When I was far away from Draupadi, she called out to me 'He Govinda'. I am very much indebted to her distress call and I have not been able to remove the debt from My heart till today." Maharaj used to say, "I am indebted to you" whenever anybody send Lakshmi for the temple construction. What we are giving is nothing compared to what Maharaj has given us. We can never repay to Maharaj. But still he shows so much of gratitude to us. Maharaj says, "Our diary should be full of whatever good things we have received from the other living entities. Krishna's diary will be full of whatever good things we have done to others. We should not make Krishna's diary as our diary."

Krishna willing, we will see the remaining qualities of a simple person in the subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Anuradha devi dasi
Fujairah.
