Simplicity Part - 8

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

This is in continuation of the transcription based on the wonderful class given by HG Vaijayantimala Mataji. In the previous mails we saw 24 qualities of a simple person. Let us continue with the other qualities of a simple person.

25. A simple person is a person with a pure heart: If we practice all the above qualities then our heart will become pure. We are trying to approach a Supreme Person who is pavitram paramam bhavaan - Supremely pure. If we want to approach a supremely pure personality then we should also try to become pure. Maharaj used to say, "Only a cat species goes and talks to a cat, only a dog species approaches another dog, if we want to go to Krishna, atleast we should try to become pure." That is why we should chant everyday, 'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.' This completely purifies our heart. We have to remember two things whenever we go for the program:

1. Glorification of Krishna.
2. Purification of our heart.

No other motive should be there. Krishna is not at all pleased with the contaminated heart, even if we do elaborate worship of Krishna. Brahmaji says very clearly in 3.9.12 of Srimad Bhagavatam,

nātiprasīdati tathopacitopacārair
ārādhitaḥ sura-gaṇair hṛdi baddha-kāmaiḥ
yat sarva-bhūta-dayayāsad-alabhyayaiko
nānā-janeṣv avahitaḥ suhṛd antar-ātmā

My Lord, You are not very much satisfied by the worship of the demigods, who arrange for Your worship very pompously, with various paraphernalia, but who are full of material hankerings. You are situated in everyone's heart as the Supersoul just to show Your causeless mercy, and You are the eternal well-wisher, but You are unavailable for the nondevotee.

Somebody wanted to have Laddu Gopalji deity. They got the Deity from one of the shops and they asked Maharaj to do abhishekam and give it to them. They made so many paraphernalia for the abhishekam and they did the abishekam. At the end of the abishekam, Maharaj said, "This much elaborate deity worship is not required. According to me, singing for the Lord is aarati for the Lord, reading Srimad Bhagavatam is abhishekam for the Lord." In another instance when Maharaj was giving instructions about Deity worship to one of his disciples, Maharaj gave few prayers from Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam to be sung daily for the pleasure of the Deity and said, "Deity worship must be simple, but at the same time it should be intense."

Our heart should be pure. It doesn't mean we stop everything. We try to do whatever is possible. We don't over exert ourselves and we don't think this is only devotional service. If we do not do devotional service with love, everything becomes ritual and not spiritual. Krishna wants spiritual and not ritual. There is a nice story in this regard. Once there was a guru who was teaching his disciples. One cat was moving here and there in between the class. Guru asked one of his disciples to tie the cat under the coconut tree. Every day the cat was disturbing the class, so every day they tied the cat. After few years, one day the guru asked one of his disciples to take the class and went out. The disciple sat on the Vyaasasan and saw the cat missing under the coconut tree. So he immediately asked one of the disciples to look for a cat from some other place and tie it under the tree because every time when the guru took the class, the cat was there. He did not understand the purpose why it was tied. How many traditions we follow like that? This is ritual. Krishna is pleased only with the pure heart. So whatever helps us to become pure, we should take it up seriously.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Anuradha devi dasi
