Dear Vaishnavas,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

The following is my notes from His Holiness Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj's class on Srimad Bhagavatam 5.10.10, given in London on October 28, 2007,

sthaulyaṁ kārśyaṁ vyādhaya ādhayaś ca
kṣut tṛḍ bhayaṁ kalir icchā jarā ca
nidrā ratir manyur ahaṁ madaḥ śuco
dehena jātasya hi me na santi

Fatness, thinness, bodily and mental distress, thirst, hunger, fear, disagreement, desires for material happiness, old age, sleep, attachment for material possessions, anger, lamentation, illusion and identification of the body with the self are all transformations of the material covering of the spirit soul. A person absorbed in the material bodily conception is affected by these things, but I am free from all bodily conceptions. Consequently I am neither fat nor skinny nor anything else you have mentioned.

Maharaja said, "The main point here is that we should be merciful to all others, but we should never be merciful to ourselves - never even to our mind, because then it will force us to sleep. We should order the mind to get up at mangala-arti. But because we're in the bodily concept of life, we pamper the body and because we pamper the body, we completely lose the spiritual concept of life.

The word 'aham' means false identification with the body. Being devotees of Krishna, we don't identify with the body. For example, we want to wear clean clothes, but we don't care what kind of clothes. We just wear the Vaishnava dress, dhoti and kurta, plus chaddar if its cold, finished.

If you don't care for the body, then it will be alright! But we want so much for the body. For example: one devotee, he's always saying that I'm not this body, but still he says I need carrot juice for improving my eyesight. Then so much endeavor is there, having to get a juice-machine etc., just for the sake of these small round balls! As soon as you pamper, you'll sleep in the bed, or as soon as you get up, you'll take medicine. One thing we should always remember - Not to pamper ourselves. There is one thing only to remember: Early to bed and early to rise. By this we'll be healthy. Meager eating also is best, really. We're eating too much. Too much of everything should be avoided in life."

Krishna willing we will continue with more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
