Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.
When Vidurji returned to Hastinapur after his pligrimage, the entire Kuru family received him with great delight. After providing him sumptuous meal and ensuring that he has taken enough rest, Yudhishtir Maharaj begins to speak to Vidurji. In Srimad Bhagavatam canto 1, chapter 13, verse 11, Yudhishtir Maharaj asks
api naḥ suhṛdas tāta bāndhavāḥ kṛṣṇa-devatāḥ
dṛṣṭāḥ śrutā vā yadavaḥ sva-puryāṁ sukham āsate
My uncle, you must have visited Dvārakā. In that holy place are our friends and well-wishers, the descendants of Yadu, who are always rapt in the service of the Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. You might have seen them or heard about them. Are they all living happily in their abodes?
Srila Prabhupada very nicely highlights the significance of the word - kṛṣṇa-devatāḥ - one who is always rapt in the service of Krishna. In the purport to above verse, His Divine Grace nicely says how Yadavas, Pandavas and Vidurji all were 'kṛṣṇa-devatāḥ. "Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira was also always rapt in the thought of Lord Kṛṣṇa and His associates at Dvārakā. Otherwise he could not have asked all about them from Vidura. Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira was therefore on the same level of devotion as Vidura, although engaged in the state affairs of the kingdom of the world."
From the examples of Vidurji and Yudhishtir Maharaj, we can learn that our material positions are never obstacle for loving devotional service to Supreme Lord. Whether one is staying in royal household or one is traveling to pilgrim place, it does not matter. Whichever position we are placed by will of providence, we should continue to serve the Lord to the best of our ability.
Srila Prabhupada says, "Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja, after meeting Vidura, the first inquiry was about the family of Kṛṣṇa. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. He was always thinking of Kṛṣṇa."
Likewise in our life also, we should always give first priority to Krishna. But most of the times we ignore Krishna and keep thinking and talking about everything else other than Krishna. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verse 10.9
mac-cittā mad-gata-prāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam
kathayantaś ca māṁ nityaṁ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca
Lord explains the nature of His devotees in the above verse. When pure devotees meet each other, they discuss about Krishna and thereby experience great happiness and bliss. So whenever we meet others we should discuss about Krishna. But we engage ourselves in worthless politics and worldly gossips. Such talks will take us away from Krishna and would be source of anxiety and agitation. When we constantly think of Krishna, the continuous smaranam purifies us and helps us to approach Him who is param pavitram - Supremely pure.
His Divine Grace says that we should accept Krishna as our devata - worshipable Lord, for He alone is our eternal shelter and well-wisher. Any othe shelter in this material world is all temporary. So why to run behind such temporary shelters? "Accept the eternal position. That is Krishna consciousness movement. Eternal position. So for that eternal position, you have to make Krishna-devatāḥ, Krishna as the worshipable Deity. Krishna is eternal, and if you fix up your service to Krishna, then Krishna will accept you as servant. If you actually want to be eternally blissful, take to Krishna-devatāḥ."
In concluding para of the lecture Srila Prabhupada very lovingly glorifies Supreme well-wisher Krishna. He says, "Actually, Krishna is the only friend, and He is sitting in everyone's heart. He is so nice friend that He is simply trying to induce us to turn our faith towards Krishna. He is coming as avatära, incarnation. He is giving us advice from within. sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja [Bg. 18.66]. He's such a nice friend. Although we have left Krishna, Krishna has not left us. Here He is living with Me within my heart to give me advice, "Please come back." sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ [Bg. 18.66]. So Krishna is so nice friend. He is such a nice friend that even to the enemy He gives the greatest benediction. Just like Putanā. Putanā came to kill Krishna, smearing poison on her breast. But Krishna gave her promotion on the motherly platform. Krishna is so grateful that "This demon might have come to Me to poison Me, but I have sucked her breast. She has become My mother. Therefore she must get the position of My mother." Krishna is so grateful. If you give little service to Krishna sincerely, Krishna will never forget you. And He's so powerful. If Krishna becomes your friend and Krishna remembers you, then what you want more? Just imagine. So Krishna... Here it is said, Krishna-devatāḥ. Fix up your mind in Krishna and be happy."
Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi
