Sense Gratification Leads to Destruction - Part 8

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in conclusion of the previous offering titled, "Sense Gratification Leads to Destruction"  which is transcription of one of the nectarean class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 5.13.19 in Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav dham, Rajkot on 6th August 2008. In the previous offering we heard the below point.

1. Our attraction to sense gratification.
2. Sense Gratification steals our intelligence.
3. The nasty whirlpool of material existence
4. Sense Gratification is not permanent.
5. Give the taste of Krishna consciousness to children.
6. Propagate Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam.

Now we shall hear further.

7. Vedic way of dressing:
Devotee: The varnashrama dharma is so scientifially arranged Maharaj. Such a nice system. As soon as the family head retires, the children take over.

Gurudev: There was one, one writer in England you know. And he had written nice book that how the societies should function. So he said that, "think you are only four years old. We have life only for four years. So one year we are student, one year we are grahastha, one year vanaprastha and one year sannyasa. So the process will be very steady. So you can see he is going to school. Then you can see he is married, he is driving and go, go. So this is the way the societies should function." And it was the vedic culture. You might have come across somewhere and he has written nice novel which is very popular in England.

Devotee: (Speaks about how Indians have taken to western way of dressing (jeans etc) although it doesn't suit them.)

Gurudev: Very bad and in Indian body, it looks funny. Man ! Gracious dress must be there. Our lady, our mothers and sisters they were putting always saree. Now there is argument that we have to work. So saree comes in the way. It's a silly argument. My mother was working so hard. They had to bring the (water-pots), they had to draw the water from the well and put all the three things on their head and in their waist and they were walking one kilometer and climbing the stairs and everything was in saree. Never they complained that I have to work and I should throw away saree and put on punjabi dress. Punjabi dress was completely unknown. What to speak of jeans? And till the end they were putting sarees. As soon as the girl is 14 or 15 years she stops wearing skirts and starts putting on sarees and so from 15 years to 60 or 70 or 80, whatever she is, all the sarees were there and they were working very hard, very hard. They will just tuck here and the saree was quite alright and she will also work very hard. Now the question comes that "in work what do we do?" Arey man ! nothing can be done. But our sense gratification is the main thing and we are completely bankrupt, settled in America or England or wherever you know. We are completely bankrupt. And then we are mentals, because with those dresses we behave like mental people

(Referring to a devotee Maharaj said - she is a millionare - but very gracious and steady, very steady. She had diabetes. But she was not bewildered. Husband is there, children are there. The things will go on. This tradition will save you from all inebrities. But if you change, then you become passionate and you become mental. And you don't even look after your own body, upkeep of the body. So many things are there and again weather is bad. Particularly in Minneapolis type - weather is so cold. No water. We don't feel like washing our faces also. These things again add to it. Then again the foreign atmosphere, foreign words, foreign dress ..everything comes together and in the end we are sent to the mental hospital saying that "you are lunatics". For the whole of lifetime father or mother or whoever, works very hard to rear the children. As soon as the child grows, they say, "you are lunatic."

Devotee: They say that there are four things that will destroy us if it is not maintained - bhojan, bhasyam, bhajan and vesh. Bhojan - if we don't take prasadam, then our consciousness will go bad. That is the basic need for consciousness in life. And then it is bhaasyam.

Gurudev: Bhaashyam is speech.

Devotee: Our bhaasyam - speech and bhajan - if it  does not remain in Vedic consciousness, then instead of talking about transcendence, we talk about cinema etc. Instead of singing Bhagavad Gita verse, we sing rubbish and then bhesh

Gurudev: bhesh is show

Devotee: The way we dress - and I have seen that it really has impact on consciousness. (Gives example of how when dressed in Vedic way, even strangers in aeroplane - had nice cordial talk about Krishna - simply inspired by the Vedic way of dressing)

Gurudev: See - there is subtle difference on consciousness, according to the dress. But we are throwing ourselves under different garbs. (Referring to a young devotee Maharaj says) Don't do it. You are getting to young age. Be awake to all these things. So nice to see you but you are sleeping. (Gurudev laughs). Too much sleep is there.(Gurudev laughs). We have to be, we have to be austere. This is ashram.

Heartfelt thanks to Maharaj for sublime and instructive class.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
