My Deeds, My Responsibility - Part 1

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

In the material world, when we observe all around us, we find that different living entities are living in different conditions of life. There is a vast difference even from birth. Some are born in wealthy families, some are born poor, some are born beautiful, some are mediocre looking, some are very intelligent, some are dull headed. These things very much influence the difficulties faced by the living entities in the journey of  life. These all seem like injustices and it hurts us a lot, making us come to the conclusion that there is no fairness in the game of life. Different explanations are given in the scriptures of different traditions while trying to explain this phenomenon. Some believe that it is all a question of blind chance, but then it makes us helpless victims at the hands of blind chance. Some believe that God has made these arrangements at His own sweet will, but this makes God a discriminatory figure favoring some and not favoring others.

The best explanation is given by Vedic wisdom which answers all these seeming injustices by explaining the concepts of reincarnation and law of karma and this helps us make sense of life and inspire us to move towards a higher goal. By accepting Karma, we understand our ultimate responsibility and also the freedom of choice we have.

When I was discussing about this with my son HG Krpana vatsala Krishna das, he was telling that supposing we are suffering and we do not accept the fact that we are the cause for our suffering, then living entities resort to any of the following four pathways

1. To think that life is just meant for pleasure
2. Retreating into childlike ignorance
3. To become very depressed on account of the sufferings and to conclude that life is meaningless
4. To become nihilistic, rejecting all religious and moral principles and to become revengeful.

and he was also giving examples from the scriptures of how different living entities react in different ways and also the ideal response by pure devotees in four opposite ways, thus culminating in getting relieved from the clutches of material life.

We shall see these two different sets of four pathways each and try to learn the lessons they hold for us in the ensuing offerings, Krishna willing.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Vaijayantimala devi dasi
