Disinfection by Deity Darshan - Part 3

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offerings transcribing the class by HG Devakinandan prabhuji in Abu Dhabi on 16th Oct 2011 on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.16.31 when king Citraketu takes darshan of the Lord. In the previous offering we saw the following points:

1. Whimsical approach to the deities is to be totally avoided
2. Deity is non-different from Krishna
3. Deity worship equals to behaviour and to become silent in behaviour
4. Disinfection by Deity darshan

In this offering we shall see the point of becoming grave in our behaviour.

5. Becoming grave in our behaviour: Gravity of devotional service will be manifested by how we take darshan of the deity and how we conduct ourselves. Grave means we should remember our grave and when we go to a graveyard, we are always grave. Maharaj said, "When you go to a funeral, does anybody laugh? If you laugh, people will beat you up and you will have a second funeral." The point is when we become grave (Citraketu Maharaj became grave when he saw Krishna) then we are genuinely happy. But people in the material world think that if we are grave that means we are dead. But Maharaj says, "If you are grave, that means you know you are going to die. When you know you are going to die, and do nice deity worship then you become happy. But when you know you are going to die and you continue to fulfill your material desires, then every time you fulfill your material desires, you are already dying to be born again in another material body which is a product of that desire." That is why Maharaj told us often, "Please control your senses not artificially but by taking darshan of Krishna. Surrender the senses at the lotus feet of Hrshikesha and by looking at the deities, your senses become completely disinfected and they come under the control of Krishna and when they come under the control of Krishna, the behaviour of the devotee becomes grave. When the devotee is grave, he remembers that death is coming any time and that death can catch us at any time." Therefore every day we take darshan of the deities, we should remember that could become the last day, my last darshan. So how should I take darshan and how should I behave after taking darshan? That is important. Just like the same way, Maharaj said, "When you take initiation, it is very nice but the real challenge is how do you behave the day after initiation, the day after that and the day after that. That is more important." So in the same way, when we take darshan of deities, always remember that we have to walk away from that darshan behaving like a devotee. If we cannot assimilate the behaviour of a devotee, deity worship will be reduced to sentiment. Citraketu Maharaj could see Krishna and become silent and grave. Why? Because he accepted the instructions of his spiritual master cent percent

6. Deity worship to be done with the blessings of the guru: When Narada muni initiated Citraketu Maharaj into the famous mantra that he chanted, he followed the chanting of that mantra with full faith in the spiritual master. Therefore if one wants to take darshan of the deity, suitable prayers must be offered to glorify the deities. That is Maharaj's specialty. Maharaj gave us the gift of chanting Srimad Bhagavatam before the deities. So by chanting Srimad Bhagavatam, we glorify the deities. By chanting Srimad Bhagavatam to glorify the deities, without our knowledge, we are automatically becoming silent; we are automatically becoming grave and that way it is only happening because we are following the instructions of our guru. So Citraketu Maharaj achieved darshan of Krishna on the strength of the blessings of his guru. Therefore deity worship cannot be done without the blessings of the spiritual master. When one takes the blessings of the spiritual master and then does nice deity worship, then the blessings of the spiritual master will cause the deity to give the mercy to become disinfected from material desire. See the relationship between the devotees, their association, the spiritual master, darshan of the Lord and change in our character.

7. We must take full-hearted darshan: When we take darshan of Krishna, silence and gravity must be there. The man who is grave, he knows that he is going to die any time and when he knows he is going to die any time, that darshan he takes is a full-hearted darshan, not a half-hearted darshan. That is how Parikshit Maharaj lived his last seven days, full heartedly hearing Sukadev Goswami, full heartedly taking darshan of the deities. Because of his full-hearted darshan, he became grave, he became silent and by becoming silent, he could hear Srimad Bhagavatam. Sometimes Maharaj says, "We love the sound of our own voices and by hearing our own voice, we do not hear Srimad Bhagavatam. That also is a problem." Better to become silent and hear Srimad Bhagavatam and become grave in our behaviour than to speak so much Bhagavatam and not act on it and then we will end up in the grave and when we end up in the grave, we have not taken darshan of Krishna, there is no disinfection and all the material desires have nicely created a new body which is waiting for us in the next life. So better we be careful.

Prabhuji went on to explain how deity worship should not be about asking Krishna to fulfill our desires and the same shall be transcribed and offered in the next mail Krishna willing.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
