Lessons from Bhishmadev - Part 22

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the transcription of the nectarean and inspiring class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in London on Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 1, Chapter 9, in 1990s. In previous offerings we had heard about how fate played in the life of Bhishmadev and some of the lessons we need to learn from the same.

In the last offering we were hearing from Maharaj about how potent and purifying devotional service is. Now we shall continue to hear further.

Maharaj: (Refering to one of the devotees in the class Maharaj says) I saw him before he started Krishna consciousness. Now after three years, he has completely changed. He is very healthy. His wife is healthy, children are healthy and business is going on. He is all grahastha, cent-percent grahastha and even then his life is completely changed. Only thing he did is he has added Krishna. So why not everyone take up this devotional service?

(Referring to another devotee Maharaj says) I have seen him in Reading few years ago. He was in death-bed. But now see how shining he is! (laughter). At that time he was working in nights, just to maintain his room and eating bread three days old. Just for eating bread and maintaining the room, he had to work odd hours in the night. And he was completely losing his health. The first thing I told him was to stop his night work. And then somehow or the other he managed and came to the temple. Now money or no money, he is very healthy. What for you want money? He is driving car and doing service. He can eat as much as he can. He can take even a shower of prasadam, because he is serving "Food for life". (laughter) Why for we want money? We want money to stay somewhere and eat something and this is all arranged here. And on top of this, Lord is here. So we are staying happily because Lord is there. If anyone comes and joins the temple, they will be very happy.

Who will not take this process? Why should we allow our minds to roam about unnecessarily? Krishna will give everything. Have full faith. My parents did not know anything about Mahabharat or Bhagavatam even. They said, "forget everything and just chant." And they chanted. They don't know these things. In India, in temples where the discourses go on, people just say, "very nice, very nice." No questions. Not a single question. Faith, complete faith. That doesn't mean we should have blind faith. But too much of it is bad. We must have faith. We must have faith in chanting at least, if nothing else. Today one person was asking so many questions and I had to be heavy with him. I told him, "First you buy the beads and chant 10 rounds and then come and then we will answer all your questions." Without chanting, mind just wanders about what Krishna did, how He did and why He did. So forget about it and just chant.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
