Receiving the Mercy of Lord Parasurama

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. 

On the occasion of Parasurama Jayanthi  and Akshaya Tritiya we will mediate on the glories of Lord Parasurama. Lord Parasurama incarnation is very special in the sense that He displayed extra ordinary power. He also displayed great quality of composure and leading a life of brahminical principles once His mission was accomplished.  

Srimad Bhagavatam 9.24.56 mentions when the Lord appears in this material world.

yadā yadā hi dharmasya kṣayo vṛddhiś ca pāpmanaḥ
tadā tu bhagavān īśa ātmānaṁ sṛjate hariḥ

Whenever the principles of religion deteriorate and the principles of irreligion increase, the supreme controller, the Personality of Godhead Śrī Hari, appears by His own will.

The mission of Lord Parasurama was to destroy all the irreligious and corrupt Kshatriyas (represented by the rulers, police and military force). In kali yuga these days (in India) we see that the ruling class and police force are very much corrupted. A recent authentic survey in India has shown that police force is the most corrupted (85%) of all government segments. The meaning of Kshatriya is "kṣat ranāt trāyate iti kṣatriya" - (One who protects the innocent and weak from kṣat (wounds) caused physically and mentally). However, statistics reveal that in India which is supposed to the main hub of vedic culture, the Kshatriyas (police) are so corrupt that around 30% of the criminal cases are closed by framing innocent and weak people who do not commit any crime. Many fake encounters are done to kill witnesses to protect the corrupt and rich. So instead of protecting the weak and innocent, the so called Kshatriyas destroy their lives by abusing their power. And the corrupt nature of politicians in this age needs no mention as it is well known. So the situation is much much worse than Treta yuga when the Lord appeared.

Now a question may arise, "Lord Parasurama appeared to protect the society in Treta yuga when the world situation was much better, but now the situation is really degraded and why He is not appearing?" The answer is that destroying corrupt Kshatriyas is not alone the cause of Lord’s appearance. The Lord appears primarily to protect the pious and saintly persons. Though the Kshatriyas in Treta yuga were corrupt, the brahminical culture was very strong and significant number of people were following the religious principles. They were situated in the mode of goodness and when they were harassed, the Lord came to protect them and shows His beautiful form to assure them.  But in kali yuga the Kshatriyas are much corrupted but the people in general following brahminical principles are very few in number and with the result the society is mostly in the lower modes of passion and ignorance. So most people are not qualified to see the Lord in person and hence the Lord is not appearing.

So even in this kali yuga, if more people take to following the regulative principles and raise to the mode of goodness, the society as a whole will improve and become qualified to receive the mercy of Lord Parasurama, though He is not visible to us. Lord Parasurama Himself is teaching this in His avatara. After destroying irreligious Kshatriyas and donating the lands He conquered to the sages, He leads a life of brahminical culture till today. Srila Prabhupada said "I have established this society for Krishna consciousness to create brahmanas." He also recommended to Indira Gandhi the then prime minister of India that all MLAs and MPs should follow the four regulative principles and become enriched in goodness. So this Krishna consciousness society is a manifestation of Lord Parasuram's mercy on fallen people of Kali yuga. 

Let us meditate and glorify Lord Parasurama who still lives in this world glorified by His devotees, on this auspicious occasion. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9.16.26 Sukadeva Goswami says,

āste ’dyāpi mahendrādrau / nyasta-daṇḍaḥ praśānta-dhīḥ
upagīyamāna-caritaḥ / siddha-gandharva-cāraṇaiḥ  

Lord Paraśurāma still lives as an intelligent brāhmaṇa in the mountainous country known as Mahendra. Completely satisfied, having given up all the weapons of a kṣatriya, he is always worshiped, adored and offered prayers for his exalted character and activities by such celestial beings as the Siddhas, Cāraṇas and Gandharvas.
