Reading Srila Prabhupada's Books

Hare Krsna Prabhus and Mathajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

There is a very nice and significant point Srila Prabhupada brings up in one of his conversations with his disciple.

Srila Prabhupada asked a devotee, "Can you quote the verse?" They could not. Srila Prabhupada said, "Just see - you are not reading my books. You have to read my books and you have to study and learn my books just like a lawyer learns the law books. You must know everyth chapter and verse. If you do not know, how will you teach these men unless you know my books.

Every day you have to read my books. Do you know that every day even I read my own books? Do you know why I read my books? I read my books everyday because even I learn something new when I read them. Do you know why I learn something new when I read my books? Because these books are not my books - I do not write these books. Every morning when I sit here to write my books Krsna comes personally and he dictates to me what to write, so I simply take dictation from Krsna and I write these books. Therefore when I read them even I learn something."

After reading this, one can really see that he/she is truly with Krsna just by reading Srila Prabhupada's books, and that one is miles away from the Lord when not reading them.

In SB 1.6.25 Narada Muni says:

etāvad uktvopararāma tan mahad
bhūtaṁ nabho-liṅgam aliṅgam īśvaram
ahaṁ ca tasmai mahatāṁ mahīyase
śīrṣṇāvanāmaṁ vidadhe ’nukampitaḥ

Then that supreme authority, personified by sound and unseen by eyes, but most wonderful, stopped speaking. Feeling a sense of gratitude, I offered my obeisances unto Him, bowing my head.

It is the transcendental voice of Krsna which have been manifested as Srila Prabhupada's books. Srila Prabhupada is the medium for us to see Krsna and actually serve Him. And this medium is personally manifest through his books. As he says, its Krsna (same Krsna who spoke to Arjuna in Kurukshetra) who dictated to him when he wrote his books. One gives so much importance to Gita, but one can truly now see that each and every word or sentence that Srila Prabhupada writes is as good as the Gita itself. Srila Prabhupada's purports are as important as the verses them self.

In SB 3.9.11 Brahmaji says:

tvaṁ bhakti-yoga-paribhāvita-hṛt-saroja
āsse śrutekṣita-patho nanu nātha puṁsām
yad-yad-dhiyā ta urugāya vibhāvayanti
tat-tad-vapuḥ praṇayase sad-anugrahāya

O my Lord, Your devotees can see You through the ears by the process of bona fide hearing, and thus their hearts become cleansed, and You take Your seat there. You are so merciful to Your devotees that You manifest Yourself in the particular eternal form of transcendence in which they always think of You.

The transcendental sound vibration enters into our hearts through Srila Prabhupada's bona fide words when we read his books. And as they enter our hearts, we get purified and the lord takes his sit in the lotus of our heart. Simply put, by reading Srila Prabhupada's books, we can see Krsna and also be with Him. Srila Prabhupada's purports should be chanted and studied carefully like the verses, and they will purify us.

Please pray that I improve my consistency in reading the divine books of Srila Prabhupada.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Madanmohan das
