The Secret of Devotee's Success

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Once when I inquired our Guru Maharaj about some doubt regarding the execution of some work in which I had no previous experience, Maharaj told me take Bhagavatam and turn to the verse 3.9.29:

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
mā veda-garbha gās tandrīṁ sarga udyamam āvaha
tan mayāpāditaṁ hy agre yan māṁ prārthayate bhavān

The Supreme Personality of Godhead then said: "O Brahmaa, O depth of Vedic wisdom, be neither depressed nor anxious about the execution of creation. What you are begging from Me has already been granted before.

Maharaj explained that no task in the world can be bigger than the task entrusted to Lord Brahma. Although Brahma was personified depth of vedic wisdom, he had no previous experience in creation and no training institute was available at that time to seek for some training. This made him anxious. Because of his vedic knowledge he started to think in the line of a devotee.

Devotees are always successful because,

1. They always think about their incapability to execute anything independently.
2. They have the sense of being sub-ordinate to the Lord.

There lies the secret of their success.

Srila Prabhupada explains that "One should not be puffed up because he is entrusted with certain executive work. Any person authorized by the Lord or by His bona fide representative is already blessed."

Only one has to think how incapable we are to execute any work independently. This is pure fact that we fail or make mistakes in our day to day work due to our failure to remember the Lord in however minute the task may be. We do not realize that we have no capability to execute any work that is entrusted to us. We think that we are better and we will be able to perform something without anyone's help. The fact is that we cannot even breath without the help of the Supersoul who is constantly residing in our heart, then what to speak of doing big tasks? We should always realize that whatever we are doing is only by the pure mercy and blessings of Guru and Krishna.

Secondly when one is fixed in the sense of being sub-ordinate to the will of the supreme Lord, he is sure to come out successful. The Lord always wants to see His devotee as the hero of some episode which He Himself performs. It was He only who,

a) Withdrew the duration of life from everyone in the battlefield
b) Withdrew the speculative power and strength of enthusiasm from the great military phalanx made by the Kauravas headed by Bhisma, Karna, Drona, Salya etc.

The Kauravas arrangement was expert and more than adequate, but He (Lord Krishna) just by being in the battlefield, without even taking any weapon and fighting, destroyed them all. The Lord wanted Arjuna to be the hero of the battle of Kurukshetra and therefore for Himself He took the role of a charioteer and He gave all the power to Arjuna to come out victorious. He chooses Arjuna because Arjuna was always subordinate to the will of the Lord and was conscious of the fact that everything is happening by the will of the Supreme Lord and he was only an instrument. This conscious decision to become subordinate to the will of the Lord and act as His instrument is what brings glories to a devotee and makes him successful in whatever work he performs.

That is the secret of devotee's success. Let me pray at the lotus feet of Guru Maharaj that I do not take pride for whatever small thing I do in spiritual service.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
