Developing the Urge to Hear and Chant Srimad Bhagavatam

Dear Vaishnavas,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada & Srila Gurudev.

As I was reading Queen Kunti's book, this verse came up, Srila Prabhupada and HH Maha Vishnu Goswami Maharaj many times quote this particular verse 1.2.17 of Shrimad Bhagavatam:

śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ
hṛdy antaḥ stho hy abhadrāṇi vidhunoti suhṛt satām

Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Personality of Godhead, who is the Paramātmā [Supersoul] in everyone’s heart and the benefactor of the truthful devotee, cleanses desire for material enjoyment from the heart of the devotee who has developed the urge to hear His messages, which are in themselves virtuous when properly heard and chanted.

Somebody can ask how to develop this taste? In the purport Srila Prabhupada explains:

"We have already discussed developing a taste for hearing and chanting the holy sound. It is done through the medium of service to the pure devotee of the Lord."

Continuing with purport: "The Lord is more anxious to take us back into His kingdom than we can desire. Most of us do not desire at all to go back to Godhead. Only a very few men want to go back to Godhead. But anyone who desires to go back to Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa helps in all respects.

One cannot enter into the kingdom of God unless one is perfectly cleared of all sins. The material sins are products of our desires to lord it over material nature. It is very difficult to get rid of such desires. Women and wealth are very difficult problems for the devotee making progress on the path back to Godhead. Many stalwarts in the devotional line fell victim to these allurements and thus retreated from the path of liberation. But when one is helped by the Lord Himself, the whole process becomes as easy as anything by the divine grace of the Lord."

Taken from Queen Kunti/s book pages 19,23-24,

By hearing about Krsna, however, one comes to the platform of pure goodness. śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥwe should try to hear and chant about Krsna always, twenty-four hours a day (non-stop, HH Maha Vishnu Goswami Maharaj is the best example of this particular instruction, we have noticed that every free moment Maharaj utilizes in studying-chanting the SB verses), and in is way the dirty things will be cleansed from our hearts (because our mind constantly accumulates material dirt even without our desire and the only medicine is śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ). It is not that one should only attend a bhāgavata-śaptaḥ, an official reading of Srimad-Bhagavatam for seven days. That is another form of exploitation.

Similarly, simply by hearing or chanting the verses of Srimad-Bhagavatam, one can be purified. Whatever knowledge exists in the world is present in Srimad-Bhagavatam. (Guru Maharaj many times explains this point to us that there is no necessity of reading any other literature except Srimad Bhagavatam).

It includes literature, poetry, astronomy, philosophy, religion, and the love of Godhead. Śrīmad-bhāgavataṁ purāṇam amalaṁ. If one simply reads Srimad-Bhagavatam, he gains the topmost education, for if one studies SB he will be well versed in every subject matter. Even if one does not understand a single word of the mantras of SB, the vibrations themselves have such power that simply by chanting one will be purified. śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ. The word puṇya means pious, śravaṇa means "hearing" and kīrtanaḥ means "chanting." One who chants or hears the verses of SB becomes pious automatically. To become pious one generally has to endeavor a great deal, but if one simply hears the verses of SB or Bhagavad-gita one becomes pious automatically. Therefore it is a rigid principle in every temple of our Krsna consciousness movement that there must be a daily class for hearing and chanting. Our movement is meant for training spiritual leaders, but without hearing and chanting it is impossible to become a leader.

Your humble servant,
Murlidhara Krsna das

Moderator's Note: We have been receiving mails from HG Murlidhara Prabhu since the group began last year. Just thought I should give a short intro on him. HG Murli Prabhu is born in a muslim family from Yugoslavia. By Krishna's mercy he met HH Mahavishnu Maharaj 10 years back in Bhaktivedanta Manor, England. Just a couple of days association and he has been a strong devotee all these years. He does not have any association of devotees nearby, but maintains his devotion just by hearing to Srila Prabhupada's lectures, studying his books and talking to HH Mahavishnu Maharaj over phone. He is a perfect example of a devotee who can survive just by the association of pure devotee's vani no matter what the surrounding environments may be.
