Nija Bhrtya Bhashitam

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
My humble obeisances to all the members of this group. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

Kaveri mathaji's letter which Kalacakra prabhu forwarded in his mail inspired me to write. I'm reading 7th canto of SB and trying to share the interesting points from this canto. The following sloka SB 7.8.17 talks about the appearance of Lord Narasimha:

satyaṁ vidhātuṁ nija-bhṛtya-bhāṣitaṁ
vyāptiṁ ca bhūteṣv akhileṣu cātmanaḥ
adṛśyatātyadbhuta-rūpam udvahan
stambhe sabhāyāṁ na mṛgaṁ na mānuṣam

To prove that the statement of His servant Prahlāda Mahārāja was substantial — in other words, to prove that the Supreme Lord is present everywhere, even within the pillar of an assembly hall — the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, exhibited a wonderful form never before seen. The form was neither that of a man nor that of a lion. Thus the Lord appeared in His wonderful form in the assembly hall.

Actually, the word nija-bhṛtya-bhāṣitaṁ (His own true servant) is very significant. By appearing from the pillar, the Lord satisfied the promises of three devotees simultaneously.

1. Prahlada Maharaj - He said that the Lord resides everywhere and even in the pillar. So the Lord appeared from the pillar. He exactly appeared when Hiranyakasipu struck the pillar with his club. Unless he's all-pervasive, it is not possible to appear like that. So he proved Prahlad's statement true.

2. Lord Brahma - The Lord could have appeared in any form(human or animal) to satisfy Prahlad's promise. Why did he appear in this special form of Nara Hari? He did so to prove that his devotee Lord Brahma's words are true. Brahmaji gave a benediction to Hiranyakashipu that he won't be killed by an animal or man. The Lord could have come in any form and killed him. However, if he does like that, nobody in the future would believe the benedictions of Lord Brahma. So in order to protect his devotee's reputation, the Lord appeared in this special form.

3. Narada muni - The Lord appeared also to prove that Narada muni's words are true. When Prahlad was in the womb of his mother and when the devas tried to kill her, Narada said, "You or anybody cannot kill this lady and the child within the womb as he's directly protected by the Supreme Lord". If Prahlad is not protected, then Narada's words will become false. So the Lord appeared personally to protect Prahlad.

Also by appearing in this way and killing Hiranyakashipu, the Lord proved that his appearance and activities are divine. He established all the three major purposes of his incarnation.

a) To protect the pious - He protected Prahlad Maharaj.
b) To annihilate the miscreants - He killed Hiranyakashipu.
c) To protect the principles of dharma - What is dharma. "Veda pranihito dharma". What the Vedas says is dharma. The Vedas says that the Supreme Brahman Lord Vishnu is omnipresent and he pervades everything from within and without. By appearing from the pillar he proved his all-pervasiveness and hence the Vedas are true.

Let's meditate on Lord Narasimhadeva and get His blessings.

Your servant,
