Always Remember Krishna - Part 2

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled,  "Always Remember Krishna" wherein we saw how Arjuna was recollecting how he lost his powers as soon as Krishna left to His abode. Now we shall continue to hear further.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.15.6 Arjuna says,

yasya kṣaṇa-viyogena loko hy apriya-darśanaḥ
ukthena rahito hy eṣa mṛtakaḥ procyate yathā

I have just lost Him whose separation for a moment would render all the universes unfavorable and void, like bodies without life.

Our body has some value only as long as their is life in it. When Krishna as Paramatma, Super-soul leaves the body, the soul also leaves and the body becomes life-less. It is of no use to any one. Arjuna being a very dear devotee as well as dear most friend of the Lord is unable to bear the separation of Lord and feels that his life is also void and of no use, because Krishna had left to His abode now leaving them behind. With Krishna we are heroes and without Him we are zeroes. This truth holds good for all of us as well. But being covered by illusion, we fail to recognize, accept and acknowledge the greatness of the Supreme Lord.

Due to his pure devotion Lord Krishna not only became his friend and relative, but on the battle-field He became Arjuna's spiritual master as well as personally delivered Bhagavad Gita to him. kṛṣṇam vande jagat guruṁ. So for Arjuna Krishna was his guru as well. This verse also shows how a disciple who has genuine love for his spiritual master feels when the spiritual master leaves him. Our tricky mind will say that for Arjuna, Krishna personally instructed, but for our case it is not like that. It is true that we are not fortunate like Arjuna. But Krishna is so kind that He keeps sending His dear devotees in the form acharyas and gurus who kindly pass on the instruction of Lord to us. Srila Vishvanatha Cakravati Thakura says very nicely in his Guruvashtakam 'sākṣād haritvena' - The spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord, because he is the most confidential servitor of the Lord. So hearing from spiritual master is as good as hearing from the Lord directly.

Many of us have experienced how when our beloved spiritual master, HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj was physically present with us, even miseries which appeared like mountain never disturbed us. Now even small pebbles make us fall. Gurudev helped all of us at every moment and he was so great that just like Krishna, many times he did everything, without even revealing that it was he who is helping. Simply having his darshan, hearing his voice, words of encouragement gave so much solace and strength to face the challenges of life. Just like Arjuna did not have the luxury to enjoy Krishna's physical presence throughout his life, we also don't have the luxury of having the spiritual master's physical presence always with us. Life of Arjuna is a nice lesson for us. He is teaching us how one should constantly remember the glories of spiritual master even after their apparent physical disappearance.

Krishna willing, we will meditate more on this topic, through the pages of Srimad Bhagavatam in subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
