Always Remember Krishna - Part 20

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offerings titled, "Always Remember Krishna" wherein we were meditating on Arjuna's experiences once Krishna returned to Goloka.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.5.31 Suta Goswami says to the sages,

yenaivāhaṁ bhagavato vāsudevasya vedhasaḥ
māyānubhāvam avidaṁ yena gacchanti tat-padam

Because of his possessing spiritual assets, the doubts of duality were completely cut off. Thus he was freed from the three modes of material nature and placed in transcendence. There was no longer any chance of his becoming entangled in birth and death, for he was freed from material form.

The phrase sañchinna-dvaita-saṁśayaḥ in the above verse is worth meditating. sañchinna means completely cut off and dvaita saṁśayaḥ means doubts of duality. Now we might wonder what is this doubt of duality that was present in Arjuna's mind? We see in verses 1.15.28 and 29 also that Suta Goswami had mentioned that all the trash in Arjuna's thoughts subsided by remembering the instructions of Gita. So what is this apparent material contamination or trash that was present in Arjuna's mind? His Divine Grace clarifies our doubts through his transcendental purports. He gives us two reasons for this material contamination. In this offering we shall see the first reason.

In his wonderful purport to verse 1.15.31 Srila Prabhupada says, "Everything is a manifestation of His potency as part and parcel. The potency and the potent are non-different, so the conception of duality is at once mitigated by attainment of perfect knowledge. As soon as Arjuna took up the instructions of the Bhagavad-Gita, expert as he was, he could at once eradicate the material conception of Lord Krishna, his eternal friend. He could realize that the Lord was still present before him by His instruction, by His form, by His pastimes, by His qualities and everything else related to Him. He could realize that Lord Krishna, his friend, was still present before him by His transcendental presence in different nondual energies, and there was no question of attainment of the association of the Lord by another change of body under the influence of time and space. By attainment of absolute knowledge, one can be in association with the Lord constantly, even in this present life, simply by hearing, chanting, thinking of and worshiping the Supreme Lord. One can see Him, one can feel His presence even in this present life simply by understanding the advaya-jnāna Lord, or the Absolute Lord, through the process of devotional service, which begins with hearing about Him."

When Lord left to Goloka, Arjuna out of his love for the Lord, felt that Lord is no more present with him. We have another instance in Srimad Bhagavatam wherein Shrngi curses Parikshit Maharaj, thinking that since Krishna is no longer present here, he has to punish Parikshit Maharaj on behalf of Krishna. But there is a big difference in the way Shrngi thought about Lord's departure and how Arjuna thought of the Lord's separation. Shrngi thought that way out of pride and there was no tinge of devotion in his thoughts. Therefore while saying that Krishna has left for His abode, he was trying to take the position of the Lord and cursed Parikshit Maharaj. Whereas Arjuna meditated on the Lord out of feelings of separation and loving devotion. This actually pleased the Lord. So the Supreme Lord helped him by reminding the instructions of Gita and also gave him the realization that He is non-different from His instructions.

This is a very important lesson for us. When spiritual master leaves for spiritual abode, it does not mean that he forsakes the disciples or is no longer present. The spiritual master eternally lives through his vani and is always guiding the disciples who sincerely seek and follow his instructions. So to think that the Lord or His pure devotees are no longer present is material contamination and we can get rid of such contamination, by sincerely taking shelter of Their instructions through loving devotional service.

Krishna willing we shall continue see the other reason for material contamination in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
