Normally (or should I say abnormally) when we go to temples we either look out for someone whom we get along well with or someone important (according to our materialistic thinking) to greet. We completely ignore other devotees or guests who are present there.
We had the fortune of the transcendental association with our spiritual master for few days in Rajkot last week. While speaking to us on one of the occasions Maharaj was strongly insisting how to practice devotional service in our day to day activities and without which our devotion will become superficial.
"Although Dhruva Maharaja was a small boy, he wanted to offer prayers to the Supreme Personality of Godhead in suitable language. But because he was inexperienced, he could not adjust himself immediately. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, being situated in everyone's heart, could understand Dhruva Maharaja's awkward position. Out of His causeless mercy He touched His conchshell to the forehead of Dhruva Maharaja, who stood before Him with folded hands."
Prabhupad says in the wonderful purport 2.7.15 -"The Lord is the protector of everyone, but He is the first protector of one who acknowledges the superiority of the Lord instead of being so falsely proud as to deny the superiority of the Lord or to claim to be equal to Him. He is ever superior. Since the Lord is superior to everyone, His perfection is also superior. No one can imagine it ."
"One should engage oneself in the practice of yoga with determination and faith and not be deviated from the path. One should abandon, without exception, all material desires born of mental speculation and thus control all the senses on all sides by the mind."
"it is important not just to stick to the words, but to follow the instructions according to time, place and cicumstances." If we fail to adapt ourselves to time, place and circumstances, we would end up in frustration and land up doing nothing.
Recently H.G. Sajjanapriya Krishna Das had written a mail, 'How long it will go on ?'. After reading this mail, we came across the following article about a beautiful daffodil garden spreading for over 5 acres of land on a mountain near a place called Arrow head, near Laguna.
Everyone of us are very much attached to our wealth, especially when we are dolling out money to temples and other charities. We always have the feeling that the moment we part our money and then that money does not belong to us.
Deep in the forest of Jharikhanda, there lived a wolf. Once, while he was walking in the countryside, he found a sheepskin on the ground .He then thought “If I wear this sheepskin, then I can get mixed up with the flock of sheep that comes here everyday.
He must have full confidence in the previous acarya, and at the same time he must realize the subject matter so nicely that he can present the matter for the particular circumstances in a suitable manner.
"Those who drink through aural reception, fully filled with the nectarean messages of Lord Krsna, the beloved of the devotees, purify the polluted aimof life known as material enjoyment and thus go back to Godhead, to the lotus feet of Him ( the Personality of Godhead)."
"May the glorification of the transcendental name, form, qualities and paraphernalia of the Supreme Personality of Godhead protect us from theinfluence of bad planets, meteors, envious human beings, serpents, scorpions, and animals like tigers and wolves.
"In executing devotional service, one has to see every living entity equally, without enmity towards anyone yet without intimate connections with anyone. One has to observe celibacy, be grave and execute his eternal activities, offering the results to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
"Maharaj Pariksit attained the highest perfection, shelter at Lord Krishna's lotus feet, simply by hearing about Lord Visnu, Shukadev Goswami attained perfection simply by reciting Srimat-Bhagvatam, Prahlada Maharaj attained perfection by remembering the Lord.
With reference to the above, Maharaj instructed us that while remembering this SLMUD which drags us towards kaliyuga, we should be able to remember a transcendental SLMUD which will drag us towards Krishna.
Today we had a very grand festival of Lord Jagannath's Ratha-yatra in the city of Chennai. Thousands of devotees from all over the world had come to take part in this annual festival which has been conducted since the last 25 years. Over the years the Ratha-yatra festival has gained a lot of popularity in Chennai
One may wonder, "What is there is looking at the the idol form of the Lord? It is not moving even. On the other hand there are so many movie stars who move about, run around with colorful dresses and we can enjoy it so much." But the reality is as clear as daylight - A movie is run for so many hours, but even the ardent fans of the actors see it not more than a few times.
"He will be a virtuously qualified reservoir of all good qualities; he will be jolly and happy in others' happiness, distressed in others' distress, and will have no enemies. He will be a destroyer of the lamentation of all the universes, like the pleasant moon after the summer sun."
"O Brahmana Vyasadeva, it is decided by the learned that the best remedial measure for removing all troubles and miseries is to dedicate one's activities to the service of the Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead [Shri Krishna]"
Everyone of us know that time is imperceptibly passing without our knowledge and it goes on ruthlessly without any mercy. Time is ticking very fast and inevitable death is approaching for all of us eventhough we do not want it .
"Such Vedantis, or the bhakti-vedantas, are impartial in distributing the transcendental knowledge of devotional service. To them no one is enemy or friend; no one is educated or uneducated. No one is especially favorable, and no one is unfavorable.
Our minds are always restless and flickering. A bad thought pollutes our conciousness and hence it becomes imperative on us to keep the mind under control. Our problem is always that we are not able to concentrate our mind on japa and other devotional activities.
"Lord Siva said : "My dear Lord, my mind and consciousness are always fixed on Your lotus feet, which, as the source of all benediction and the fulfillment of all desires, are worshipped by all liberated great sages because Your lotus feet are worthy of worship. With my mind, fixed on Your Lotus feet, I am no longer disturbed by persons who blaspheme Me, claiming that my activities are not purified. I do not mind their accusations, and I excuse them out of compassion, just as You exhibit compassion toward all liviing entities."
Normally almost everyone of us go to the Supreme Lord Krishna to fulfill our desires. Krishna also does fulfill our desires almost all the times mainly because He knows that if He does not fulfill our desires, we will stop whatever little bit of devotional service we may be doing.
"One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and becomes fully joyful.He never laments or desires to have anything.He is equally disposed to every living entity.In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me."
