Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the transcription of one of the necatrean, powerful, thought provoking Bhagavatam class given by our beloved spiritual master, H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in Alachua. Let us continue to hear another instructive answer given by Maharaj for one more question by a devotee.

Devotee: Many a times we are confused when we think that if Krishna wants to give, He will give and if Krishna does not want, He will not give. So people don't endeavour enough. How much should we endeavor? Sometimes we see people working for more than 8 hours and get so little and we wonder whether it is worth to work like that. They are so poor and have to take care of family and children. But interestingly we find in Krishna's book even five thousand years ago there was poverty. We find that people like Sudama was so poor that his wife requested him to go and meet Krishna. How come brahmanas were left so poor and not given charity?

Maharaj: See, we try honestly very hard to get some job or start some business. But incoming income depends upon Krishna's wish. Everybody tries. Everybody wants to be rich or atleast want to have sufficient lakshmi for them. But then the family should be contended because we all depend upon Krishna. And we very well know that we should try hard. Srila Prabhupada writes in some purport, but it is to this effect that when you start some work, you should work very hard thinking that you are going to the produce the results. Do you follow me? But when it comes to the results, you pray to the Lord -"Now I have worked hard and it is upto You." And He will guide. Sudama by his wife's insistence went to Krishna and Krishna served him very nicely (giving him food, bathing his feet etc). But Sudama didn't open his mouth saying, "I want something". That should be our attitude. He walked all the way. He worked very hard to go to Krishna. He didn't hesitate to perform the austerity. But after going there, he didn't open his mouth.

Krishna knows everything, 'sarvasya caaham hrdi sannivishto'. He is situated in everyone's heart. And eventually He will give and one thing we have to understand regarding marital relationships. Times are not going to be bad always. Times are going to change if you are honest. May be today you don't have prasadam to eat, doesn't matter. Atleast we are chanting. We have eaten so far all the life. So what harm is there, if we don't eat for a day or two or for a week? This is how in India the families were surviving and even now they are surviving. Because they know that today the times are bad with this man or woman and this is not going to continue. Some days are going to be better. And I have seen the whole life, the lady may struggle to raise her children, but when they grow up, the children become very nice. Husband did not do any help for the whole life time. And he wanted to sell his properties. Nobody wanted to buy them. So he had a unique way of selling. He will  sell the doors to somebody, windows to somebody, bricks to somebody, land to somebody (laughter). He was completely mad. But what could he do? He wanted lakshmi and nobody was buying the property. So whatever came, he sold and somehow or the other the family was maintained and now the children are nice. Their times are completely changed. That is why we should understand this. But we don't understand this because, we are not devotees yet. At the moment we have changed our dresses, we have shaved our head. But we know our position. We are not sincere. We have to intensify our sadhana and honest working side should be there.

And as soon as you are devotee, you should be staright-forward. That is nature of devotee. You should not cheat others or try to get money some how or the other. No. If you do like that, then Krishna can take away. Prabhupada writes that He has thousands of hands. If He wants to take away from you, how can you hold with two hands? How much can you hold? He has thousands of hands and if He gives with thousands of hands, how much you can take with two hands? So for this you have to wait. Patience is required. That is the best quality. What happens otherwise is that wife starts thinking, "This man is useless" and the wife tries to change the husband. Husband tries to change the wife and they put themselves into more trouble. The society is disturbed. The children are completely ignored. And you don't know, by the time another person comes, then again there is another karma. And again you may not improve your conditions. The point is you might have improved with the first wife itself. Again you bring another wife or husband and again the same trouble starts. So these are the very fine intricacies and thats why our marriages got to be very solid, thinking and depending on Krishna. Depending on Krishna in the sense that your endeavour, you try hard thinking that you are producing the result. But when the time comes for the result, then you have to wait patiently.

Krishna willing, we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
