Prabhupada is our Ultimate Shelter
We many times go to so many literatures which has no meaning at all. This religious literature is the supreme; that is why it is known as 'The king of the scriptures'. And among puranas also, there are 18 puranas; but this is known as ''Mahapuran''. You know prasad and mahaprasad, there is a difference. Prasad is Krishna and Mahaprasad is actually from the plate of Krishna. That is how, this is from the plate of Krishna. Mahapuran is exactly non different from Krishna. As soon as we have desire to associate with Krishna, then this is the representation of Krishna Himself... non different from Him.
In front of us...and because of the hard labour of Prabhupada, each word is completely clearly translated, given equivalents, nice and purported very nicely. The only thing is required...that you please take at least half an hour, 15 minutes, 1 hour whatever time you can afford and get into this very submissively. You may read one paragraph or you may read one shloka…it does not matter. Whatever you read, you just chew over it again and again for the whole day, and you will have definitely light.
Krishna is not far away; He is just in these shlokas. So, please sing after me. And nū, nūnaṁ... nū is long, first. So, if you pronounce bit long it will fit in.

nūnaṁ bhagavato brahman harer adbhuta-karmaṇaḥ
durvibhāvyam ivābhāti kavibhiś cāpi ceṣṭitam
Please hear, it’s a bit long purport; please bear with me.
Purport: The acts of the Supreme Lord, in the creation of just this one universe, appear inconceivably wonderful. And there are innumerable universes, and all of them aggregated together are known as the created material world. And this part of His creation is only a fractional part of the complete creation. The material world stands as a part only (ekāṁśena sthito jagat). Supposing that the material world is a display of one part of His energy, the remaining three parts consist of the vaikuṇṭha-jagat or spiritual world described in the Bhagavad-Gita as mad-dhāma or sanātana-dhāma, or the eternal world. We have marked in the previous verse that He creates and again winds up the creation. This action is applicable only in the material world because the other, greater part of His creation, namely the Vaikuṇṭha world, is neither created nor annihilated; otherwise the Vaikuṇṭha-dhāma would not have been called eternal. The Lord exists with His dhāma, or in other words with His eternal name, qualities, pastimes, entourage and personality, which are all a display of His different energies and expansions. The Lord is called anādi, or having no creator, and ādi, or the origin of all. We think in our own imperfect way that the Lord is also created, but the Vedānta informs us that He is not created. Rather, everything else is created by Him (nārāyaṇaḥ paro ’vyaktāt). Therefore, for the common man these are all very wonderful matters for consideration. Even for great scholars they are inconceivable, and thus such scholars present theories contradictory to one another. Even for the insignificant part of His creation, this particular universe, they have no complete information as to how far this limited space extends, or how many stars and planets are there, or the different conditions of those innumerable planets. Modern scientists have insufficient knowledge of all this. Some of them assert that there are one hundred million planets scattered all over space. In a news release from Moscow dated 2/21/60, the following piece of knowledge was relayed:
“Russia’s well-known professor of astronomy Boris Vorontsov-Veliaminov said that there must be an infinite number of planets in the universe inhabited by beings endowed with reason.
“It could be that life similar to that on earth flourishes on such planets."
“Doctor of Chemistry Nikolai Zhirov, covering the problem of atmosphere on other planets, pointed out that the organism of a Martian, for instance, could very well adapt itself to normal existence with a low body temperature."
“He said that he felt that the gaseous composition of Martian atmosphere was quite suitable to sustain life of beings which have become adapted to it.”
This adaptability of an organism to different varieties of planets is described in the Brahma-saṁhitā as vibhūti-bhinnam, each and every one of the innumerable planets within the universe is endowed with a particular type of atmosphere, and the living beings there are more perfectly advanced in science and psychology because of a better atmosphere. Vibhūti means “specific powers,” and bhinnam means “variegated.” Scientists who are attempting to explore outer space and are trying to reach other planets by mechanical arrangements must know for certain that organisms adapted to the atmosphere of earth cannot exist in the atmospheres of other planets (Easy Journey to Other Planets). One has to prepare himself, therefore, to be transferred to a different planet after being relieved of the present body, as it is said in the Bhagavad-Gita (9.25):
yānti deva-vratā devān pitṝn yānti pitṛ-vratāḥ
bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti mad-yājino ’pi mām
Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods, those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings, and those who worship Me will live with Me.
Mahārāja Parīkṣit’s statement regarding the workings of the creative energy of the Lord discloses that he knew everything of the process of creation. Why then did he ask Śukadeva Gosvāmī for such information? Mahārāja Parīkṣit, being a great emperor, a descendant of the Pāṇḍavas and a great devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa, was quite able to know considerably about the creation of the world, but that much knowledge was not sufficient. He said therefore that even greatly learned scholars fail to know about that, even after great effort. The Lord is unlimited, and His activities are also unfathomed. With a limited source of knowledge and with imperfect senses, any living being, up to the standard of Brahmājī, the highest perfect living being within the universe, can never imagine knowing about the unlimited. We can know something of the unlimited when it is explained by the unlimited, as has been done by the Lord Himself in the unique statements of the Bhagavad-Gita, and it can also be known to some extent from realized souls like Śukadeva Gosvāmī, who learned it from Vyāsadeva, a disciple of Nārada, and thus the perfect knowledge can descend by the chain of disciplic succession only, and not by any form of experimental knowledge, old or modern.

kṛṣṇo rakṣatu no jagat-traya-guruḥ kṛṣṇaṁ namadhvaṁ sadā
kṛṣṇenākhila-śatravo vinihatāḥ kṛṣṇāya tasmai namaḥ
kṛṣṇād eva samutthitaṁ jagad idaṁ kṛṣṇasya dāso 'smy ahaṁ
kṛṣṇe tiṣṭhati viśvam etad akhilaṁ he kṛṣṇa rakṣasva mām
kastūrītilakaṃ lalāṭapaṭale. He has kastūrītilak, on the forehead of ... lalāṭapaṭale means on the fore head of Krishna, there is nice tilak and kasturi is very costly material. It is obtained from the navel area of a deer and they are particular in certain parts of this globe. It is very rare to obtain kasturi and that is why it is very costly. To obtain a fraction of kasturi, we have to spend maybe thousands of dollars. So, that tilak is on his lalāṭa you know on his forehead. This verse is nicely describing Krishna.
kastūrī tilakaṃ lalāṭapaṭale vakṣaḥsthale kaustubhaṃ
On his chest there is kaustub jewel. kastūrī tilakam lalāṭapaṭale vakṣaḥsthale kaustubhaṃ / nāsāgre vara mauktikaṃ. There is a nice moti, on the nāsāgre, on the nose here.

kastūrī tilakaṃ lalāṭapaṭale vakṣaḥsthale kaustubhaṃ
nāsāgrevaramauktikaṃ karatale veṇuṃ kare kaṅkaṇam

gopastrīpariveṣṭito vijayate gopālacūḍāmaṇiḥ
tapta-kāñcana-gaurāṅgi rādhe vṛndāvaneśvari
vṛṣabhānu-sute devi praṇamāmi hari-priye
vāñchā-kalpa-tarubhyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca
patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ
śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare
It’s a beautiful verse from 2nd canto. There are different cantos in Srimad Bhagavatam, they have different purposes and Bhagavatam has a whole, has a different, nice purpose.It covers all the 12 cantos; it is very nicely described in 12th canto that - what is the purpose of Bhagavatam. We must have clear idea of the scripture which we are going to. Because we have a hazy idea about this great scripture we are not interested through our heart. Unless you know, what it is, it’s very difficult to relate with the scripture also. So, this verse very nicely describes that, what is Srimad Bhagavatam and how we should approach this great scripture. It says:
śrīmad-bhāgavataṁ purāṇam amalaṁ yad vaiṣṇavānāṁ priyaṁ
Very nice line, first line. śrīmad-bhāgavataṁ purāṇam amalaṁ. This is purāṇam. Purān bhavati iti purana. Purān means 'before', these things have happened already. That is why it is known as 'history'. You know in ordinary history, where there is history of kings or some battles are fought and some countries are conquered and then he produced so many children and died; and this is history, chronological history, this is ordinary history.
But this is a not our ordinary history. This puran is amalaṁ - spotless; there is no material tinge into this puran. This history is spotless description of the Supreme Absolute Truth, Krishna. And that is why it is not in a chronological order; wherever and whichever situation Krishna is glorified, is included in this scripture. That is why... it is known as purāṇam amalaṁ. Amala means no mala; Mala means contamination; where there is no contamination at all.
You find so many verses we are discussing daily, you don’t find any material tinge into it. It is all transcendental; and because it is transcendental, it gives us nice satisfaction. But as soon as we come to the material platform we are in a miserable condition. As soon as we rise above the material platform, it gives us a satisfaction. Because our soul doesn’t belong to this material platform, it belongs to the transcendental realm and in order to satisfy our soul, we must come to this. Otherwise, it is very difficult to get this satisfaction. And that is how, this purana is very important purana.
As soon as we come to this, then we, through our heart, we try to love this scripture. And as soon as you know the importance of this scripture, then very submissively we come with all the inquiries into our mind. Our mind is full of so many questions about everything we are following. Outside you go... all our faith is completely smashed; this Kali yuga is very rampant. And there is one symptom of Kali yuga that the whole atmosphere is surcharged with the faithlessness. It is very difficult to create an unflinching faith in these matters; and because we don’t have unflinching faith, we fail to understand the scripture. This great scripture... this is purāṇam amalaṁ.
And because it is such a nice spotless scripture, that is why yad vaiṣṇavānāṁ priyaṁ - it is very dear to vaishnavas...it is very dear to the devotees of the Lord. Because there is no material tinge at all. And we have seen that as soon as...unfortunately or fortunately we have the material body with us and it was not our choice. But according to our activities, we have to accept this material body. karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa / jantur dehopapattaye. By our own karmas and under supervision of Krishna, this body was decided for us by Him and there was no choice but to accept.
The only extreme good fortune is that somehow or the other, we have come in contact with Srila Prabhupada's literature and ISKCON - it's the great fortune for the living entities. Even those living entities, who just think to visit this place, they are also happy, they are also satisfied, they may not come...they may only just think about it and they are completely satisfied, because in this place there is no material inebriety.
There are so many places in Hawaii, they don’t lack.... there are so many places wherein you can have unlimited sort of material enjoyment; but this place is completely distinct and may be away from the village...away from the city or so. But even then, few souls who are really sincere to know about that- “what is this life about?”, and “why we should try to inquire about these things?”, or there are some inquisitive nature that they want to inquire something they want to find out some nice way to be satisfied; those living entities are naturally attracted to these places and that is why Srila Prabhupada is extremely kind to give us the temple communities in which we can have a nice association. In this community, what is happening...we don’t know; but one thing is definite that as soon as we come here, there is no foul language falling in our ears. Our language is very pure here and this is a great penance in this age, just to save ourselves from the bad language. Otherwise, you step out and you experience the whole thing Waikiki (Neighborhood in Honolulu, Hawaii; laughter) and this name is also Waikiki (laughter) so its famous, all over the world. You go to Waikiki and drown yourself into the ocean; this is the main thing... this is why this scripture is very unique, that it just touches the realm which is completely alien to the ordinary living entities.
The ordinary living entities they go along the current... you know ordinary current, and ordinary current is... what is it? Eat, drink and be merry...this is it, and we marry. Be merry and marry (devotees and Maharaj laughter) and then again, we become distressful...again marry, again become more distressful... and again marry and again become more, more, more distressful. And this carvita-carvaṇānām goes on... this is ordinary current. But we people, somehow or the other, because of the very pure atmosphere have decided that we don’t want to go with the ordinary current and this is a fact. And one thing is that it was not our choice also to come to this place. We are just forced. Somehow or the other, we were kicked by outside, by so much maya and so many kicks and there was no other way so we just ended up into this position (devotees' laughter). Yes, don’t be in a cuckoo’s land that you have come here voluntarily. No, we will never come voluntarily. It was unbearable outside and that is why we wanted to save our skin. We had to come...Srila Prabhupada ki jai (Maharaj’s laughter). This is how please come to the correct understanding and don’t throw ourselves back then again into the same rut, that is the main thing to be understood here.
The whole thing is completely inconceivable... that is the topic we are discussing here. achintya is completely achintya; chintya means we can think about it. This Waikiki is chintya we can think about it, we see it... that is chintya... we can think about it. But this is achintya, it’s inconceivable. And inconceivable things cannot be conceived...can never be conceived and if that cannot be conceived, then we should go to the authority who has a bit of conception about these inconceivable things. Hardly we can have full glimpse, it is not our capacity. And that is why where all our endeavours end, where all our intelligence is lost, where everything is exhausted, therein the devotional service starts. It is not that just we are chanting the names of Krishna or just we are having darshan or we are coming to this temple or we are eating prasadam. No...no, we have nearly exhausted all the directions and that is the main point to be discussed here. He is completely achintya...He is inconceivable...His activities are inconceivable. And that is why Vaishnavas have to go to some literature which gives you direction to these inconceivable Supreme Absolute Truth. And that is why we are daily...we are discussing this scripture. naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu nityaṁ bhāgavata-sevayā. Everyday regularly we are coming to this... otherwise if you don’t come to this, then it is very difficult.
This is a tradition established for us... Srila Prabhupada has given instruction that every day at 4:30 there must be mangal arati and we are somehow or the other, getting up by 3:30 or quarter to 4 or maybe 4:00, 4:15, or maybe 4:25 (Maharaj and devotees laughter) or maybe 35 minutes, but somehow or the other we are doing that regularly...this is a tradition... very nice auspicious tradition, just to get up early in the morning. Early to bed, early to raise...you know this saying in English? Or you don't know?

Devotee: Early to raise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise
Maharaj: That’s right; see...that is why you are healthy, wealthy and wise (laughter). This is how...it’s a popular saying and Prabhupada has forced us to establish this tradition and that is why we are healthy, we are very happy and we are quite satisfied in this atmosphere because we are getting into bed early, getting up early.In Waikiki, you know better than me that 4:30 is their time to go to bed (laughter). I don’t know how Srila Prabhupada came here and how you people are forced to get up at 4 o’clock (devotees’ laughter); this is a great surprise for me, this is inconceivable (laughter) apart from Krishna inconceivable, Prabhupada’s activities are inconceivable. In this part of the world, these demons are sitting here hearing Bhagavatam. Can you imagine? (Maharaj and devotees’ laughter).
Prabhupada once was invited by Gujarat Government; you know... he came here and established ISKCON in New York as we know. So then after one year, he went back to India. And Indian government was very happy that this Swamiji has established some society… vedic society in America. So, they were very much elated, so our Gujarat Government invited Prabhupada to honor him. So, he was going to the Government house. You know Indian population always...they are after some miracles. So yesterday we saw the miracles. So this is how they are elated, if they saw someone producing some ash or some gold or something. We are going to show you gold today. We have very nice video with us, it is known as ‘Guru busters’ (laughs). It shows very openly that how that baba is producing. So Prabhupada was going, so people were saying - "Swami! Swami! Perform some miracle, perform some miracle" (Maharaj and devotees’ laughter). They thought that he will produce gold or something; so, then Prabhupada was very calm and quiet and said, "Do you want to see my miracle?" Yes, we want to see chamatkaar (laughter). Chamatkaar means miracle. So, Prabhupada said that these white boys they are from America; see they are shaved; they have nice shika; they are wearing dhoti; this is my miracle (laughter). And really, this was his miracle!!
Otherwise, how can he conceive? You had completely different traditions, you are completely up to the neck, may not be up to the head, drowned into Waikiki. (Maharaj and devotees’ laughter) And some Indian old swami comes, and sits here and there is big crowd around him. Can you imagine? This is inconceivable; because he was following the inconceivable Lord in his heart, he carried the inconceivable Lord in his heart. And he came not alone here, but Krishna was with him. The inconceivable Lord was with him, and we are all part and parcel of Krishna.
yathā bhramate ayah, itis known in Srimad Bhagavatam (yathāyo bhramate – 5.18.38) ayah means the iron pieces around. yathā bhramate ayah. Iron pieces are maybe here; and if you keep the magnet in between, iron pieces helplessly will rush to the magnet. This was the sort of iron piece was sitting here and you people were completely helpless but to come to him. If the magnet is there, iron piece cannot remain separate; it has to come and helplessly it has to come; it is not independent, it is dependent upon the gravitational force of the iron magnet. And this gravitational force, he carried with him and because of that, few living entities came to him and as soon as they came to him, they saw that this lifestyle - maybe there is no sense gratification, but it is a nice gratification (laughs). But their soul was completely satisfied; this is yad vaiṣṇavānāṁ priyaṁ.
This is a miracle... greatest miracle; otherwise in this part of the world, we cannot conceive that the group of white people or black people or brown, or whatever it is... they sit and hear Srimad Bhagavatam. It is inconceivable; as soon as you follow inconceivable Krishna, your activities also become inconceivable.
Association...you associate with drunkards; you are going to end up in pubs. You associate with woman hunters; you are bound to do the same thing. This is how,this association was established by Prabhupada and now we are all following - those who are following, to the extent they follow, they are very satisfied; this is yad vaiṣṇavānāṁ priyaṁ.
yasmin pāramahaṁsyam ekam amalaṁ jñānaṁ paraṁ gīyate
ekam amalaṁ jñānaṁ- only one jñān is here. And that’s why Prabhupada had made this as the goal of his existence. He wanted to translate the whole scripture, and he knew that he does not have much time at his disposal because of the advanced age. But even then, he began and to our great fortune, he just translated upto tenth canto at least. And the devotees who tried to translate after him, they are also equally powerful as Srila Prabhupada. Two cantos also later translated by Hridayanada Goswami and now the whole Bhagavatam is in front of us. This is ekam jñānaṁ param giyate.
And in order to establish this scripture firmly into the temples, he has given us instructions, that daily we must have the discussion. This is the best tradition. You’ll become what you establish in your life. If you are a family man, then you must have good traditions. This tradition is worth. Yesterday, some two couples came to see me. They have nice altar at home. They also carry on some morning programs. But because of the atmosphere in Hawaii, many times we freak out, you know? There is no need of it; Nice traditions have got to be established.
There’s a very funny story how these traditions were. If they are not nice, there will be a bad tradition. Some tradition will be there. So, what happened, that once there was a man in Bombay and he was a pick pocketer. You know, pick pocketer? (Maharaj asking devotee). You don't know, had you been to India…?
Maharaj: Your pocket should be strong, otherwise they will just cut it; dollars will be gone (laughter). This is pickpocketing, because in India, the population...there's plenty of population. As soon as you get down in Bombay, you don’t know what is happening really (laughter). Everywhere there are human beings, you know, so these pickpocketers are there. So, they know that you’re coming from Hawaii. They know that you must have dollars with you. So unknowingly, there is pickpocket; so, it was his business, pickpocketing. So, the business was booming (laughter). Daily, he was getting so much money. So, what happened then, eventually when he got rich, so much money was with him. So, he wanted to marry. It doesn’t work (laughter).(Maharaj is referring to the mike)
So, he decided to marry then because once you have riches you must have wife. So, he decided to marry. (Maharaj looking at a small child) Smile…smile, with smiling face.
(Maharaj asking devotee): Do you understand English?
Devotee: Very, very small
Maharaj: “Oh, very little English” (laughter). Banana like face...I don't like. You know banana? Face banana, no. (laughter)... Melon, melon, melon (laughter)...Hare Krishna!
Our Krishna smiles, you don’t have Krishna here, that's why you are not smiling. (laughter). So, he wanted to marry. So he thought that I am a pick pocketer, so my wife must be pick pocketer (laughter), then the business will double, and...so it was very difficult to find a women pick-pocketer (laughter); so he moved about all over India and he could not find any wife, expert in pickpocketing. So, he went to Kolkata eventually and he got one in Kolkata, there are... (laughter) So he was very pleased; eventually they married and now the business was doubled. He was pickpocketing, she was pickpocketing and so much jewellery and gold and big house and oh! They were enjoying like anything.
So then eventually they have to have a son, a child is to come; so, they went to Krishna’s temple and both of them sat there and prayed to Krishna - "Krishna! I am pickpocketing, my wife is pickpocketing; we must have supreme pickpocketer - son (laughter); our tradition must go on." This was his tradition; So, Krishna will always say 'tathastu' - alright, you will get a son who will be supreme pickpocketer (laughter).
So then what happened, that, the time came, the son was to be born, so they were waiting eagerly that my son must be supreme pickpocketer. This was his tradition. So, the son was born and to his surprise his right-hand fist was closed like this (son's); he wouldn't open. So, they tried, tried, tried...showed so many people and took so much medicine, because unless he opens the hand how can he pickpocket? (laughter)
He was telling that "This son is no good for pickpocketing because he is always closed fist." So, they did not know really what to do. So eventually they went to some psychiatric and told the difficulty that our son has tight fist, he cannot open his hand, how can he pickpocket (laughter)? So, what happened that the psychiatric thought the father is pickpocketer (Maharaj addressing another Maharaj) Jai Maharaj! mother is a pick pocketer, so this son must be pick pocketer (laughter). Because it was their tradition. So, he thought that if we can show him nice necklace of diamond and gold and, beautiful necklace, maybe he will open his hand to take the necklace. So, he advised them to prepare a beautiful necklace and there was so much gold with them and diamonds and everything was there. So, the parents prepared a very nice necklace; beautiful necklace was prepared, and that necklace they showed to that son and, "Oh!", son immediately opened his hand to grab it, and the ring fell from his hand. There was a ring inside his hand (silence) and the nurse was searching for her ring (laughter).
The point is that whichever tradition you introduce the younger profession (generation) is bound to follow. So please don't commit mistake. Otherwise instead of this tradition, we will have some other traditions. Anyway, the traditions have got to be there. So, it's better to come submissively to this literature in order to elevate ourselves. This way, somehow or the other, we don't understand this, the importance of the literature, and that's why we don't come to the literature. As soon as we understand the importance, then nobody can stop. Nobody can stop. We'll find our time. So many times, we are wasting daily... unknowingly, we waste so much time. We have so much time at our disposal, but we unnecessarily, we are just in some cuckoo's land… we are always in. And we think that "I will do this, I will do that, I will do that, I will do that", and ignore to come to Srimad Bhagavatam.
We were in Fiji and the business tycoon is managing the temples. So, when I visited first time, so I told him that "Prabhu, you are a president and you must know a few shlokas or something". He said "No, no Maharaj, I am very busy, I can't learn these things (laughs). You tell me any other thing. If you want Lakshmi you can take, but no, don't trouble me" (laughter). I told him "Lakshmi? Yes, I want Lakshmi" (laughter). Someone said you should be expert in learning these shlokas. So, then he said "No, no, how to do it? I am very busy in my activities". I told that "You have so much time. What you should do, that you should study one verse, in the morning, and keep the xerox copy or written copy with you. And whenever you have few minutes, you just look to the verse, because you have already understood one verse, so if you go on looking to the verses, for the whole day, maybe in two days you will learn the verse". So, he tried that; he was studying one verse from Bhagavad Gita and he was repeating it for two days, and he learnt now...now he chants nearly seven chapters of Bhagavad Gita. So, this is how, such a busy man, if he can learn, we are really not that busy you know. So, while going, while coming back, while travelling in the buses or cars or whatever it is, if we can utilise our time, these verses will be with us and as soon as these verses are with us, we will be elevated always. You will never fall down to the ditch again. Otherwise as soon as you ignore this scripture, you'll definitely fall down.
Once there was a grhasta disciple and he wrote to Prabhupada, that "Srila Prabhupada, when I was brahmachari I was doing so much service; now I'm married, and I don't have time. So, what can I do, Prabhupada? I want to serve but can't do anything". So Srila Prabhupada wrote to him one letter, that letter is still in our collection of the letters, that: "You have 24 hours at your disposal. You please try to do whatever you want for 22 hours, but you just give me 2 hours. And in one hour, you chant rounds, whatever the number you can chant; and in one hour, you read my books, and I will guarantee you that you will not fall down." So, this is how this is very important.
And then in the third line of this verse, very nicely it is described what is there in Bhagavatam:
tatra jñāna-virāga-bhakti-sahitaṁ naiṣkarmyam āviskṛtaṁ
tatra means therein, there is knowledge (jñāna); virāga- detachment is there. And as soon as knowledge is there, detachment is there, bhakti is bound to be there. So, these three things are included in this scripture. First the knowledge is given nicely through the realised souls; the whole knowledge, and particularly the canto which we are discussing, second canto. The purpose of second canto is knowledge.
The first canto qualifies you to understand the hidden interest of the living individual. It is known adhikār lila. And as soon as you come to second canto, it is jñāna lila. The second canto gives you the full knowledge. And that's why first and second canto, they are very important. Many times, Srila Prabhupada insisted that we should only discuss first and second cantos again and again. And this is how the devotees, the inquisitive, serious devotees must concentrate first - on the second chapter of the first canto; it is the ocean of knowledge. Only 34 verses, but you should master those verses.
And from the second canto, there are 4 important verses which gives you the full knowledge of Srimad Bhagavatam. And they are known as catuh shloki Bhagavatam. In four verses, the whole Bhagavatam is included. Don't worry if you can't go through everything...do not worry at all. Sukadeva Goswami, Parikshit Maharaja, everybody is very kind. They have given you only four verses. You study those four verses, and whole Bhagavatam philosophy is with you. And those are from 2nd canto, 9th chapter, verse numbers 33, 34, 35 and 36. And nicely described, purported by Srila Prabhupada. Just study those four verses first, and you will develop the taste to study Srimad Bhagavatam.This must be the first priority in our life, it's goal of existence.
Srila Prabhupada devoted so much time for this, daily he was getting up at 1 AM to translate these things. During the day time, he was very busy, there was so much disturbance. In your place, he stayed here continuously, I think, for four months many times; and he translated Caitanya-caritāmṛta here. This was his goal, this way, because Caitanya-caritāmṛta is the more nice explanation of Srimad Bhagavatam. If you want to understand Srimad Bhagavatam, you must go through the pages of Caitanya-caritāmṛta, and you will understand Bhagavatam more clearly. Make your goal of this life, at least till we are in the temple. This crowd always goes on changing. I don't know how long you will be here. Something comes out and we just leave and go. We are married or your mind freaks out or whatever it is. So please, till you are here, make this a very serious attempt to go through these things. It's very nice, as I told you, only lucky souls, extremely fortunate souls, they come under the roof of Srila Prabhupada. You are not ordinary people, you have already performed so many pious activities in your previous life, and you have completely decided; as I told you, you may be forced to decide, but we have somehow or the other decided that during this lifetime, I will do this complete job.
evaṁ vyavasito buddhyā. In Bhagavatam, it is very nicely described: (SB 8.3.1)
evaṁ vyavasito buddhyā samādhāya mano hṛdi
This is the way to approach the scriptures. evaṁ means like this; vyavasito means completely nicely situated in our material life. Now you are brahmacharis or grhastas, or whatever it is, you are very nicely situated in your life. Now, one thing you have to do, that you have to be very careful regarding the material possessions which we have. And we've to be very careful regarding the innumerable desires you have. There are so many desires in our mind. They come and go. But few desires, we meditate on, and we completely forgo this jñāna, virāga and bhakti and karma, we completely forget. And that's why we don't come to this scripture. We should be tac chṛṇvan su-paṭhan vicāraṇa-paro bhaktyā vimucyen naraḥ.
tat means therein; śṛṇvan- you should hear always, śṛṇvan su-paṭhan - then you should study. After hearing, just don't hear from this ear and take out by the other ear. Now you've to retain it, and you start to study. Now this verse we are discussing, you please, today you study this verse. It is very easy, if you repeat again and again, if you go through the purport, everything is very clear. As soon as you study then the third stage is vicāraṇa-paro - you just think over it again and again. And as soon as you think over it again and again, you will learn how to read in between the lines. The lines are very clear but we have to get accustomed to read in between the lines. We don't want to read only the verse. No, verse is very clear. The equivalents are given, purport is there, translation is there, but we have to have our own realisations. And the more you try, the more you think over these verses, you will have definitely realisations.
What is said in Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says very nicely, teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ. teṣāṁ - means all these people, all of us; satata-yuktānāṁ - those who are always engaged in doing these activities, in studying, repeating, trying to understand these activities and then (silence), teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ / bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam. bhajatāṁ - worshipping this, prīti-pūrvakam - with so much of love. Then Krishna promises something in the second line: teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ - those who are always engaged in understanding Me, bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam - lovingly worship Me, dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ...this dadāmi is a very nice word in sanskrit. This is verb, and each verb in sanskrit has nine different forms- first person, second person and third person. These are three persons. First person, I am speaking; I am first person. You are hearing, you are second person, and we are talking about somebody, he is the third person. So, these are three persons. And each person, in a normal ordinary language, there are only two numbers - singular and plural. But sanskrit, being very highly sophisticated language, there are three numbers again. First person - singular; dual - two persons, another form; and plural, another form. So, each person has three forms. So, three persons have nine forms.
And out of these nine forms, dadāmi, dadā is verb - to give, and dadāmi is first person singular, means I give. This is how if you know the preliminary rules of the language it will help you to understand. That's why we have crash courses in Vrindavan, and we have one even in Mayapur also. Very successfully, these preliminary rules could be learnt within a month. And within a month we are bit of inside in the language. And we don't want to be pandits...we are not interested to become pandits, but our devotional service must be increased and that's why we require to understand these things. Krishna says dadāmi - and what I am giving you, buddhi-yogaṁ - My devotional service will increase, the intellect by which yena mām upayānti te - by which you can come to Me. This is how Krishna gives the intelligence, but we have to use the intelligence.
In your country, there was a research carried out before three - four years and they have proved that we have so much intelligence that during the whole of lifetime, you use only 10 percent of intelligence. And 90 percent is lost. You cannot have a count of intelligence. That this lifetime I will use 10, next lifetime I will use 90. No, it's gone. At the time of death, the whole intelligence is gone. So Srila Prabhupada is telling that instead of 10 percent utilise your 60 percent, 70 percent or 80 percent of intelligence, and try to get into these things.
Why to waste the intelligence? Anyway, it is going to go away, and by the computers...now we have computers, I think we are using only 2 percent of intellect. This is why it is a good asset, but to depend on it is a madness. It's a nice asset, you can take the help...but don't depend upon it. Otherwise what happen? Then, I have got a computer; I've got a disc, Bhagavatam disc; and in the disc, everything is there; nothing is here (refers to brain, laughs). Man, you have all the discs, all Prabhupada's books are there, everything is there and there's a great satisfaction that I have my computer, I have all the discs with me; I'm carrying everything with me and nothing is going here. No, that's not the end; computer is not the end. This is how, don't lose your intelligence and I'm very sorry that in this part of the world, particularly, the children are so very dependent upon calculators and that they cannot calculate now. In India, formally, when we were studying, everything was on the tip of the tongue. And even now the calculators are not that popular there. They calculate and subtract or add and something. But day by day, we are very expert in copying the West; so, we are also copying very fast your calculators and computers. This is how the whole humanity is degenerating. Instead of increasing the intelligence, we are just losing the intelligence. And this intelligence, please don't lose. That's why Bhagavatam says that tac chṛṇvan su-paṭhan vicāraṇa-paro, you just think over it again and again. And if you meditate on these things, definitely something will come out.
We have so many ideas, but one idea we meditate on that, "I want to get married; I want to get married" and that's it; brahmachari is completely mad (laughter). This idea we meditate on. There are innumerable ideas, that I want to earn money, I want to build house, or so many other things. But one idea we catch and as soon as we catch, then we meditate on it, that "I want to marry, marry" (imitates). And then he looks to the girl and, "this one is not good, maybe Saudi or American will look good" (laughter). And daily instead of meditating on Bhagavatam, the girls are there; now that point you have caught and you are meditating. And then maybe some girl smiles at you and brahmachari is very pleased (laughs) - "At least somebody likes me" (imitates, laughs). And then somehow or the other they come together and separate and so many other things, I don't know. So, these things, because you meditated on that point, you went in that direction. You meditate on this point, and you will come to this direction.
dhautātmā, it is known in Bhagavatam, dhautātmā, completely clean ātmā. At the moment our ātmā is contaminated... ātmā can never be contaminated, but it is covered by contamination, material contamination. And as soon as you clean it vidhunoti, by Bhagavatam, then you become dhautātmā. And dhautātmā śrī kṛṣṇa-pāda-mūlaṁ na muñcati. Those who are nice spirit souls, we have, by Prabhupada's mercy and our Gurus and disciples and everybody, they are running over these places for this fact that every living entity must clearly know that this body has nothing to do with their spiritual existence. That's the main 'ABC' of spiritual life. And we have fortunately understood this. Daily we are repeating this and dhautātmā, we become completely pure spirit soul. Then as soon as you become pure spirit soul, as the iron pieces are helplessly attracted to the magnet, we, clean spiritual souls, helplessly are attracted to Krishna. We are part and parcel of him. And we can't avoid that dhautātmā śrī kṛṣṇa-pāda-mūlaṁ na muñcati - they don't leave the lotus feet of Krishna. And if they don't leave, means we have unflinching devotional service twenty-four hours a day. Knowingly or unknowingly, we are just performing devotional service. And as soon as you do this, nice effect is there. These verses are very powerful. Only two lines, like Bhagavad Gita.
Dhautātmā śrī kṛṣṇa-pāda-mūlaṁ na muñcati - they don't leave the lotus feet of Krishna. And then what happens? sarva-kleśaḥ pari muktāḥ. Sarva means all, kleśaḥ means mental anguish, pari muktāḥ- completely liberated. We have just come here under roof of Srila Prabhupada and we just get up at 4:30 in the morning and you are completely liberated from all the kleśaḥ, there is no mental anguish at all. We come here and we know what to do when we are in the audience of the Lord, there is no other thinking in our mind, and this is the perfection of human existence. Sarva-kleśaḥ pari muktāḥ, otherwise what happened that by these kleśas, with everything available in Hawaii, in America, the mental hospitals are full. Because they don't know what is happening. And they are full of anguish. Somebody gets married, somebody is, maybe married for two years, or somebody maybe one year... somebody pinches somebody's wife...all this illness is going on because we don't come to the right point.
You please, you are the great followers of Srila Prabhupada, you please make a goal of your existence. As it is, you are going to lose the body. This body cannot be yours for long time. Till you have that asset, you please make this goal that you will study this scripture and you will broadcast it as loud as you can. Go to house-to-house, distribute Srila Prabhupada's books, try to have sankirtan, try to distribute prasadam as we are doing, and increase this population. And the population will be very peaceful, there won't be any difficulty at all. This is what we are like, in what Prabhupada says. Krishna is not there, that's why people are suffering. As soon as they come to Krishna, it is their natural position. Our constitutional position is that jīvera 'svarūpa' haya--kṛṣṇera 'nitya-dāsa', we are nitya-dāsa, eternally we are dāsa, eternally we are servant of Krishna. And as soon as we come to Krishna, sarva-kleśaḥ pari muktāḥ. And then He gives very nice example:
sarva-kleśaḥ pari muktāḥ pānthaḥ sva-śaraṇaṁ yathā
These three words gives you the example - pānthaḥ means the traveller, sva-śaraṇaṁ means his own house, yathā means as. As after troubled journey, we come to our destination and we take some rest. If we are lucky, the wife will be smiling (laughter). And if we are extremely lucky, then wife may prepare some food for us (laughter). In India, these things we take it for granted (laughs); but therein also we are degrading very fast now because we are copying you people (laughter). So don't visit India, please. You keep to Hawaii (laughter). Okay? Don't come to India. Promise me, you will not come to India (laughter). We don't want Hawaii in India (laughs). Anyway, these things are spreading very fast. It is contagious disease.
The first thing, as soon as you earn money...the first thing is that Krishna steals your clothes. You know rich person in India.
(Guru maharaj asks Maharaj seated in the audience) I don't know Maharaj, you know him. In Bombay, there is one Patel doctor, comes early in the morning. He's a millionaire, billionaire man, and he was moving with Prabhupada. He had so much association of Prabhupada. But he is always in shorts. Actually, "Mr. Patel, you have so much money, where is your dhoti?", "Oh no, no, I like this" (mimics Mr. Patel). I told "Because you are rich, Krishna has stolen your dhoti" (laughter). And then funny clothes come in blue and red and what not, you know, so many things come as soon as we forget Krishna. Instead of that we are all travellers and we are completely troubled and fortunately we have come to our destination, Krishna bhakti. This is our final destination. You please don't leave your final destination. And be very peaceful in your destination. As soon as you leave this platform, there is all trouble. And Prahlad Maharaj says to Narsimha Bhagavan, that trasto ’smy ahaṁ - "I'm completely fed up with these things", he says. Prahlad Maharaj, that time he said "I'm fed up." How much more fed up we should be in our lives? That time he was fed up with material existence.
trasto ’smy ahaṁ kṛpaṇa-vatsala duḥsahogra-
saṁsāra-cakra-kadanād grasatāṁ praṇītaḥ
This is a very nice verse from Prahlad Maharaj’s prayers to Narasimha Bhagavan. I think we are coming to the end of the timing. This verse is beautiful. It is from 7th canto, 9th chapter and verse number 16. Please try to study this verse. We'll try to discuss that next. But these verses are very powerful. Just you touch Srimad Bhagavatam daily and you are liberated. Very extremely fortunate souls will definitely open Bhagavatam like us. We are extremely fortunate because of the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and hard labour he has done.
So please don't ignore this and in the end, I must request you something that, there may be so many apa-sampradayas coming out. There are so many other gurus, so many Indian gurus also will travel here and there. They want to cash on Prabhupada's hard labour. Prabhupada has already prepared the ground for everybody, and somebody comes just wipes of the whole thing. So please don't deviate your attention. ISKCON is Prabhupada's heart. Come what may, you stay here in ISKCON. We may fight with each other in ISKCON, doesn't matter. Okay? Fight, you understand? Fight? Little, little fight (laughs). You create fight (laughter). We may have difference of opinions...or, we may not like President, or we may not like this or that...it doesn't matter. But always be with ISKCON; GBC is our authority, please obey them, and they are also very understanding. So please, don't leave ISKCON. Just promise me this, today. You, all of you, promise me that you will not leave ISKCON. Never. In dream also, you should not leave (laughs), because this is Prabhupada's heart. And I will tell you one thing, that somebody may come here and may be initiate fifty disciples or hundred disciples, but there is no follow up work. Except Srila Prabhupada, nobody can offer you anything. Only it is the monopoly of temples that we give shelter to so many living entities. You know, these grhastas come here; it is very difficult for them to maintain two people, husband and wife, and eventually they fight and they stay apart and do this and that. And we are here, maintaining maybe hundred living entities daily. This is Prabhupada's mercy. Please, please recognise these things. Somebody may come here and go, but we should not deviate at all - our Srila Prabhupada, his followers, his disciples, they are very kind to us and there is no trouble at all.
Once I was in Vrindavan and there was a Bhagavatam class and somebody asked me that, "What do you think about ISKCON?" Some devotee from Miami or somewhere. Miami is graduation to Hawaii (laughter). So, he stood up and said ‘Maharaj, what do you think about ISKCON’. I told “ISKCON depends upon us”. “You're in ISKCON, isn't it” I told; “yes”, he said. So, the way you behave...that’s how ISKCON is.
So, everybody, whichever way we behave, we are increasing the fame of Srila Prabhupada, or decreasing. So, you please behave in such a way that our Gurus will be proud of us. You become nice disciples of your Gurus. Don't run here and there. Guru tattva is one, all gurus divert you to Krishna. There is no other thing at all. And if he does other thing, he cannot be a Guru. So, every guru is guru, and please follow your gurus very sincerely, and please try to understand from them the importance of the literatures which we have.
So much Prabhupada has given in ten years that we will not be able to read and understand during the whole of your lifetime, not this, but hundred lives to come.Srila Prabhupada had once given very nice instruction in one of the tape's lectures, and he says that there are 18000 verses in Srimad Bhagavatam. Each verse requires at least one month to understand. We require one month to learn, and with the computers, now maybe two months. At that time computers were not there. So, he says that 18000 verses, 18000 months divided by twelve gives you 1500 years. Where have we 1500 years at our disposal? We have hardly 100, and not true that 100 even. Fifty, and in 60, 70 years of lifetime, half the lifetime we snore, we talk with our nose. So that is wasted again; so please… we don't have time. Just somehow or the other please make endeavour, and be happy with this.
