Sudarshana devi dasi

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

In this world, each one of us have our own set of prescribed duties according to our age and type of ashram we are in. As a student, children have to go to school/college daily, be attentive in class, do their assignments, studies, etc. Now-a-days the world has become so competitive that even this phase of life is not peaceful as it used to be for us or for our ancestors. Children are exposed to so many challenges and there is lot of peer-pressure in the society that even holidays and summer vacations are packed with so many tuitions and  courses without any time for rest or recreation. After studies, then we have to find out a suitable job. Getting job is a big task and more difficult than that is to maintain the job. Then as one enters into grhastha ashram, depending on our past karma and Lord's mercy, one gets a life-partner and then children etc. So in all these activities, we have to face different kinds of people in different modes and are bound to be affected by them. Being born in this world, we cannot escape from these prescribed duties, but have to face the same. How can we protect ourselves from the modes ? Before starting his service of creating the universes, Lord Brahma prays to Supreme Lord Krishna in verse 3.9.24 as follows.

naabhi hradaad iha sato 'mbhasi yasya pumso
vijnaana shaktir aham aasam ananta shakteh
rupam vicitram idam asya vivrnvato me
maa reerishishta nigamasya giraam visargah

"The Lord's potencies are innumerable. As He lies down in the water of devastation, I am born as the total universal energy from the navel lake in which the lotus sprouts. I am now engaged in manifesting His diverse energies in the form of the cosmic manifestation. I therefore pray that in the course of my material activities I may not be deviated from the vibration of the Vedic hymns."

In his wonderful purport to the above verse Srila Prabhupada writes, "Every person engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord in this material world is prone to so many material activities, and if one is not strong enough to protect himself against the onslaught of material affection, he may be diverted from the spiritual energy. In the material creation

Brahma has to create all kinds of living entities with bodies suitable to their material conditions. Brahma wants to be protected by the Lord because he has to contact many, many vicious living entities. An ordinary brahmana may fall from the brahma-tejas, or the power of brahminical excellence, due to his association with many fallen, conditioned souls. Brahma, as the supermost brahmana, is afraid of such a falldown, and therefore he prays to the Lord for protection. This is a warning for one and all in the spiritual advancement of life. Unless one is sufficiently protected by the Lord, he may fall down from his spiritual position; therefore one has to pray constantly to the Lord for protection and the blessing to carry out one's duty."

Our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj used to tell us that our house should be surcharged with spiritual vibrations. Every day when we step out for work, we should offer dandavats to Lord and ask for forgivance for leaving Them and seek permission to go to work. And in the evening, as soon as we return from work, we should take a shower and again go in front of the Deities and offer our obeisances, thank Lord for allowing us back to Their service. This constant sincere prayer, sadhana and regular association with Krishna through Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam will help us to be sane throughout the day, irrespective of whatever be the circumstance we are put in the outside world.

The last line "maa reerishishta nigamasya giraam visargah" in the above verse which means "I therefore pray that in the course of my material activities I may not be deviated from the vibration of the Vedic hymns." is worth meditating. It is important for us to follow the footsteps of Brahmaji and daily take shelter of Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam so that we are protected from the impact of material modes. Few days ago we heard from our god-brother HG Devakinandan Prabhuji how Maharaj during his grhastha ashram, even while doing business was always associated with Gita. He never ever wasted time. When there was no customer at his shop, Maharaj usefully spent time reading Bhagavad Gita and when customer came he spoke Gita to them. After going home, he took care of his children and then when they went to sleep, he again had some quite moments with Lord by studying Gita. As a Mahabhagavata he has practically shown how it is possible to be in touch with Lord, even while being engaged in our prescribed duties.

I pray at the lotus feet of Srila Gurudev and Srila Prabhupada that I remember their golden words and follow their instructions.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
