Recognising the Supersoul

Recognising the Supersoul

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

The recent offering on the topic "Lessons from Twenty four gurus", (especially Part 34) regarding Pingala's song of detachment is really very nice to meditate. HG Kalacakra Prabhuji has nicely framed an acronym UFAIL wherein

U stands for Unhappiness - akaamadam,
F stands for Fear - bhaya,
A stands for Anxiety - aadhi
I stands for Illusion - moha
L stands for Lamentation - shoka

This is based on the verse 11.8.31 of Srimad Bhagavatam wherein Pingala repents as follows

santaṁ samīpe ramaṇaṁ rati-pradaṁ
vitta-pradaṁ nityam imaṁ vihāya
akāma-daṁ duḥkha-bhayādhi-śoka-
moha-pradaṁ tuccham ahaṁ bhaje ’jñā

I am such a fool that I have given up the service of that person who, being eternally situated within my heart, is actually most dear to me. That most dear one is the Lord of the universe, who is the bestower of real love and happiness and the source of all prosperity. Although He is in my own heart, I have completely neglected Him. Instead, I have ignorantly served insignificant men who can never satisfy my real desires and who have simply brought me unhappiness, fear, anxiety, lamentation and illusion.

In contrast when we serve the Supreme Lord the Lord we get UPASS and also it is eternal.

U stands for Ultimate dearest object - ramanam
P stands for Prosperity - vita pradam
A stands for Attractive (one who gives actual love or pleasure) - rati pradam
S stands for So near - samipe
S stands for Supersoul who is nityam or eternal

We are worse than Pingala because Pingala repented for her mistake and became completely detached from all material association, but for us, we are still failing in devotional service because of our intense attachment of material things which are perishable.

U - Ultimate dearest object - ramanam: The Supreme Lord as Supersoul is the ultimate dearest object (ramanam). Without the presence of the Supersoul, the soul does not exist in the body. The body does not have any value when the soul and Supersoul leaves it and people love it only because of the presence of soul and Supersoul. Supersoul is the most dearest object because He never leaves us even if the body is cast off. He accompanies us life after life and He always stays with us.

P - Prosperity - vita padam: The Supersoul is the expansion of the Lord and therefore He is the one who can dole us all the opulence and prosperity (lakshmi sahasra sata sambhrta sevaya maanam). Therefore the Supersoul is giving us the prosperity. (vitta pradam)

A - Attractive - one who gives actual love or pleasure rati pradam: Our body or other bodies are attractive to us as long as the presence of the soul and Supersoul or otherwise the body is consigned to flames or buried even though they are dear to us. The Supersoul gives the beauty to our body or otherwise, the body deteriorates very quickly as soon as the Supersoul decides to leave the body. (rati pradam)

S - So near - samipe: The Lord as Supersoul is the more nearest person more than any of our closest kith or kin. He is sitting in our heart as Supersoul (sarvasya caaham hrdi sannivishto BG 15.15). When we say to someone that they are in our heart, then it means that they are very near and dear to us. Reality is that Krishna eternally resides in our heart and He is the nearest person to us.

S- Supersoul is eternal - nityam: The Lord as Supersoul is eternal and never leaves us even after our liberation as He is an indispensable part of the soul. The Brhadaranyaka Upanishad speaks about Supersoul. "This stranger resides pretty close by, in fact inside ourselves. He functions as the inner controller of the body and the soul, while being distinctly different from both. Neither the soul nor the body realise His existence, much less know Him intimately. We know not what He looks like, what His attributes are, what He stands for and what is the relationship between this Supersoul and ourselves." ya aatmani tishttan aatmana: antaro yam aatmaa na veda yasya aatmaa shareeram ya aatmaanam antaro yamayati sa ta aatmaa antaryaami amruta says the Upanishad.

Although this Supersoul is residing within us eternally, we have rejected Him because we are engrossed in so many relationships of the material world like our neighbours, colleagues and relatives. Srila Prabhupada in his purport 1.13.48 very emphatically states that -"From within He corrects the desiring living beings as localized Paramatma, and from without He corrects by His manifestations, the spiritual master and the revealed scriptures." Acharyas like our Guru Maharaj and Srila Prabhupada are non-different from Supersoul. These great souls have manifested all these qualities of UPASS because they exactly behaved as the manifestation of Supersoul. They lived the verse because they were completely detached and never have we seen them unhappy, fearful, or in anxiety, illusion or lamentation. They always insist that our existence is spiritual and therefore they lived on the transcendental plane completely free from all material inebriated. It is up to us to develop these qualities of UPASS by the process of our sincere and serious devotional service and develop a sense of detachment from all that is material. The desire to practise these qualities needs to be cultivated by understanding the futility of material existence and carving our mind about the last day. Pingala admits that after her repentance, her sense of detachment arose very quickly and it is due to the Lord's mercy.

Therefore every time we take our chanting beads, we should remember this verse and the qualities of our Guru, Srila Prabhupada and Krishna and their greatness. The things is that we have to recognize this Supersoul and try to hear His voice and serve Him without any motives and try to develop an attachment to Him. Then our chanting would be loving and sincere. That is the reason Maharaj always insists that every day we have to dip into the scriptures so that devotional service can have some meaning or otherwise devotional service simply becomes mechanical. We have to steal time in studying the scriptures somehow or other.

I, therefore, pray to my beloved spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna that I should cultivate unalloyed devotional service by lovingly dealing all living entities as part and parcel of Krishna and try for UPASS.

Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
