Seed of Devotional Service - Part 1

Sudarshana devi dasi

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The following is a humble effort to transcribe one of the nectarean Bhagavatam classes given by our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 1.5.15 in Sri Sri RadhaNeelMadhav dham, Rajkot on 28th January 2005.

We should never leave the first and second cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam because first and second cantos were written by Srila Prabhupada in Vrindavan, before Prabhupada left for America. So he poured everything in these two cantos. So these two cantos are very important. No doubt, the whole of Srimad Bhagavatam is important. There is no difference. But even then, these two cantos, we should again and again revise. If you have time, please go through whole of Bhagavatam chapter after chapter. If you don't have time atleast these two cantos must be there. There are four seed verses in Bhagavatam, just like you have seed verses in Bhagavad Gita. The seed verses of Bhagavatam are from 2.9.33 through 36 and these four verses have the whole essence of Bhagavatam. Just like how the whole big tree comes from a small seed, the whole essence of Srimad Bhagavatam is there. Just like how mango tree comes from mango seed, every verse in Bhagavatam is related to these four verses. That is why they are called seed verses. You can take any shloka. Lord says in the first seed verse 2.9.33:

aham evāsam evāgre
nānyad yat sad-asat param
paścād ahaṁ yad etac ca
yo ’vaśiṣyeta so ’smy aham

Brahma, it is I, the Personality of Godhead, who was existing before the creation, when there was nothing but Myself. Nor was there the material nature, the cause of this creation. That which you see now is also I, the Personality of Godhead, and after annihilation what remains will also be I, the Personality of Godhead.

aham evāsam evāgreagre means before. Lord instructs to Brahma, "Before this creation, I was there." Brahma wanted to create. But he didn't know anything. So he had to perform the long penance. And then Krishna suggested him. 'tene brahma hṛdā ya ādi-kavaye'. He suggests us through our heart. Even now, this is the way how He is suggesting. Lord is residing as Paramatma in everyone of our hearts and keeps instructing us.

We are covered by bodily existence and we don't forget this body. And the ABC of spiritual knowledge is that we are not this body. The body eventually vanishes - shīryate iti sharirah - That which decays is known as body. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.2.33 it is mentioned :

yaḥ kaścaneśo balino ’ntakoragāt
pracaṇḍa-vegād abhidhāvato bhṛśam

pracaṇḍa-vegād means 'with great force' and abhidhāvatah means 'chasing'. Time is chasing with great force. But we forget this. Just like police is chasing a thief, with great force time is chasing all the living entities, every hour and every minute.  bhṛśam means endlessly. There is no end to it and eventually the time wins and we lose. We have seen so many living entities consumed by this great speed of the time. As soon as you remember this, then something could be renounced from us. Otherwise renunciation becomes very difficult.

Krishna willing, we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
