Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.
This is in continuation of the previous offering titled 'Seed of Devotional Service' wherein we were transcribing one of the nectarean Bhagavatam classes given by our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 1.5.15 in Sri Sri RadhaNeelMadhav dham, Rajkot in December 2003. In the previous offering we heard about four principles explained in the seed verses of Srimad Bhagavatam (2.9.33 through 36). Now we shall hear further from Maharaj.
7. Kill the Demoniac tendencies: The four principles of these four seed verses are present in every shloka of Bhagavatam. If you have clear idea of the seed principles, then you will have new approach to all the shloka. Let us take one verse 1.5.15 and we can see how it is related to the principles in seed verse.
jugupsitam dharma-krte 'nushaasatah
svabhaava-raktasya mahaan vyatikramah
yad-vaakyato dharma ititarah sthito
na manyate tasya nivaaranam janah
"The people in general are naturally inclined to enjoy, and you have encouraged them in that way in the name of religion. This is verily condemned and is quite unreasonable. Because they are guided under your instructions, they will accept such activities in the name of religion and will hardly care for prohibitions."
Srila Prabhupada has translated jugupsitam as 'verily condemned'. Any activity which is not related to Krishna consciousness is verily condemned. If we can understand this truth, then our life will be successful. Because then we will see in every activity, whether Krishna likes it or not, whether it is per Bhagavatam principles or not. Please do anything and everything. The reality is that nothing will accompany us. So whatever we do here, should be very much tested by Krishna consciousness. And if we doubt, then we must pray to Krishna, "Please slowly take me out from these hellish conditions." Anything without Krishna is hellish. One thing here again we should remember. Srila Prabhupada was giving Bhagavatam lecture and there was a butcher in the audience. So after the lecture he came to Prabhupada and said, "Prabhupada, you are saying about vegeterianism. But I am a butcher. If I close the shop, my wife and children will die really without food." So Prabhupada said, "I didn't tell you to close the shop. I am just telling you to chant
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
As soon as you chant, slowly Krishna will find out a way to get rid of this." This is the way. So please don't misguide the public. Don't smash them. Lovingly help them to take to this path. We should help them and not smash. That is what Caitanya Mahaprabhu insists that we don't kill the demons in this age. But we try to improve them so that slowly by taking this process their demoniac tendency vanish. We have fully well realised from Bhagavatam that first the tendency is there and then the activity follows. (Pointing to the devotees who had come to Rajkot from other countries, Maharaj said) You might have had a faint idea that it is good to come to India for sometime. So you would have tried so many ways to get lakshmi, then try to get leave from work, to get leave from wife and children (laughter). Then you were able to come. So we should definitely have good ideas. Then our activities cannot be bad. Then our activities will not be condemned. This is how we can understand the word jugupsitam.
Krishna willing, we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering. Today is the auspicious occasion of Gaura Purnima and it is very heartening to hear from Maharaj about purpose of Mahaprabhu's advent - Mahaprabhu appeared to kill our demoniac tendencies with the weapon of Harinam. So let us always take shelter of Harinam so that our actions are never condemned.
Sri Sri Gaura Purnima Mahotsav ki Jai ! Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki Jai ! Srila Prabhupada ki Jai ! Srila Gurudev ki Jai !
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
