Hare Krishna Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva!

With affection anyone can be captured. What is affection or love? Love means being selfless and humble, thinking less of oneself and more of the other person.

Dictionary meaning of love is: unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another. Affection means tender attachment, fondness.

If we express our love to Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna, the all-merciful and all-loving and the cause of all causes; He may or may not reciprocate immediately, but He can be definitely purchased by love. Except loving devotional service, there is no other way to obtain the mercy of Krishna.

In Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.45 it says:

taam baadam ity upaamantrya pravishya gajasaahvayam
striyas ca sva-puram yaasyan premnaa raajna nivaaritah

Thus accepting the prayers of Srimati Kuntidevi, the Lord subsequently informed other ladies of His departure by entering the palace of Hastinapura. But upon preparing to leave, He was stopped by King Yudhisthira, who implored Him lovingly.

In the purport Srila Prabhupadaji says:

"No one could make Lord Krsna stay at Hastinapura when He decided to start for Dvaraka, but the simple request of King Yudhisthira that the Lord remain there for a few days more was immediately effective. This signifies that the power of King Yudhisthira was loving affection, which the Lord could not deny. The almighty God is thus conquered only by loving service and nothing else. He is fully independent in all His dealings, but He voluntarily accepts obligations by the loving affection of His pure devotees."

Most of us have someone we love (or want to love) and/or is loved by someone. Some complain that they experience lack of love, nobody seems to love them or love them enough. However, the way to get love is to give love. Amazingly, love and knowledge, grows when you give it away! On the contrary when we give our material possession away, like say, my toy or money or food or furniture, we are left with less. Isn't it strange?!

How is it that when we give love, it increases? I don't know the answer, but we know that love does increase when we give. One can verify that with animals or humans. Sooner or later the heart melts away. The best way to direct our love is to love Lord Sri Krishna with all our hearts. The best way to love others is to see the Lord in their heart and then express our love. Then we won't get frustrated, even if the other person or entity is not reciprocating.

Here is a story related to 'giving' love, as told by H H Ganapati Maharaj, a traveling sanyasi, who visits Minneapolis every year.

Once there was a handicapped boy, named Andrew, who could hardly walk. Andrew's parents would always take him places on a wheelchair. One afternoon, Andrew's father took him on a wheelchair to a playground where local teams were playing an official baseball match. Looking at the dressed players, Andrew expressed his desire to play too. He asked expectantly:

Dad, can I play in this match?

His loving father thought that surely Andrew is not fit to play, but to keep his son's heart he said:

Sure, let me ask the team manager.

Andrew was overjoyed at the proposal. His father, knowing very well that his request will be turned down, reluctantly asked one of the team managers:

Can you allow my son play in your team?

To his surprise and Andrew's joy, the team manager agreed to include Andrew in his team!

The game continued and reached an exciting point. Team A, which had Andrew playing, had drawn the team B's score. There was just one run to win and all batters except Andrew were out. It was Andrew's turn to bat. Team A had little hope to win. Everyone cheered as Andrew limped to the batting station. The first few balls he tried to swing his bat, trying to connect in vain. Then one ball he managed to connect. The ball rolled to a stop to the mid-fielder. The mid-fielder threw the ball, by mistake, over the base. Andrew took this opportunity to run. While everyone cheered, Andrew managed to limp to the first base. The fielder, on the far side of the field, scrambled to get the ball, lifted and threw the ball hard. This time the ball went over the base again. Now, the batting team was jubilant. They shouted:

Run Andrew Run!!!.

Andrew was sweating badly, but he braved to the next base. The ball reached the other side of the field. The fielder there threw the ball again which went way over the base to the other side of the field. Now both the teams were shouting and encouraging:

Run Andrew Run!

Among cheers from spectators and players of both the sides Andrew, limped as fast as he could to the third base and headed towards the home base, and finally made it !!! Both the teams were happy and jubilant as they lifted Andrew up in the air, as walked back!

Apparently, team B, lost the match, but in this case, both teams won! They gave their love to Andrew, and kept his heart, and experienced loving joy in the process!

Krishna conscious movement initiated by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and spread all over the world by Srila Prabhupada, is all about 'giving' this pure love for Krishna. Glory to all devotees and their merciful heart!

I pray to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna, Lord Sri Chaitanya and Sri Nityananda and Gurudeva and all pure devotees of the Lord, who are the embodiment of pure love, that I get a fraction of the pure loving attitude towards Lord Krishna, and give this love to all those who I come across.

Yours, in trying for the loving service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva,
Manohar Krishna Das
