Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Mathajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This mail is in continuation of the transcription of our beloved spiritual master HDG Srila Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj's lecture on Bhagavad Gita verse 5.6.

sannyaasas tu mahaa-baaho / duhkham aaptum ayogatah
yoga-yukto munir brahma / na cirenaadhigacchati

"Merely renouncing all activities yet not engaging in the devotional service of the Lord cannot make one happy. But a thoughtful person engaged in devotional service can achieve the Supreme without delay."

We saw in the previous mails as to how much Gurudev was insisting on the importance and potency of linking our lives with Krishna and how we should not whimisically give away good association/temple. Now let us continue to hear the remaining part of Gurudev's class on renunciation.

Wires must be connected. Then the linking is there. You may have knot of wires. If wires are just joined, there is no use. But unless they are connected or linked, there is no use. There is a difference between joining and linking. Yoga means linking. Its not just joining. So sannyaasa is complete only when the linking process is there. And in linking process also again we are adviced, that you don't have to renounce everything. If you have car, use it for Krishna. If you have television, use it for Krishna. If you have computer, use it for Krishna. You don't have to give up everything. Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 3.26

na buddhi-bhedam janayed / ajnaanaam karma-sanginaam
joshayet sarva-karmaani  / vidvaan yuktah samaacaran

"So as not to disrupt the minds of ignorant men attached to the fruitive results of prescribed duties, a learned person should not induce them to stop work. Rather, by working in the spirit of devotion, he should engage them in all sorts of activities [for the gradual development of Krishna consciousness]."

joshayet sarva karmaani - Any karma you do, do it for Krishna. You may have factory - use the products for Krishna. That is joshayet sarva karmaani. Regarding grhasthas, Rupa Goswami, comes to our help. There is no need for renouncing everything. He says we should give 50% for Krishna, 25% for family and save 25% for emergencies. The thing is that these things if we don't think with common sense, then renunciation is difficult. Even if we are not able to give the percentages suggested by Rupa Goswami, atleast give 2% or 1% or even 0.5% or something you give. That is linking process and renunication also. That tendency should be there. It doesn't matter how much you are renouncing. But something we should renounce. Then "duhkaamaaptum" will not be there. You will not suffer. You will have some satisfaction when you do for Krishna. These are some practical points we should learn from these verses. Be comfortable in your situation and try to work out. If you cannot even give, atleast the food you eat, offer to Krishna.  What stops you from offering to Krishna ? If you offer the food you will get His mercy - prasadam.

The thing is unless we try to understand these things there is no use. To that extent shastras is liberal. The hearers or readers are ordinary mass. Don't misguide them - na buddhi bhedam janayed  ajnaanaam karma sanginaam - Because they are ignorant they are completely attached to material results - karma sanginaam. So only do one thing - joshayet sarva karmaani - vidvaan yuktah - Show them just the linking process.  As I told you, giving 50% to Krishna is ideal. If its not possible give atleast few percentage. Even if thats not possible its alright. Just understand one thing - "No body wants to give us money. This is the practical truth. Thats our nature. We always want to possess". Its ok tell them - "Keep it with yourself."  Slowly he/she will understand that everybody has a material body. Material body is a suffering. So suffering is there and suffering will force you to renounce. When suffering is acute you will easily renounce. You know at the time of death - you don't think, I will have to take so much gold etc. You know that its of no use. The more suffering is there, more easily you renounce. Without any suffering if anyone renounce then that person is really a great soul. Karna is the most charitable living entity. His protection was kavach and kundala. And that also he donated. But he didn't loose anything by renouncing.  In the end everything is going to go away. In Gujarathi there is a very nice saying

raavan saathe shun le gayo, karna koy gayo shun
sampathi potlun bandhe, vaikuntha na gayo koi

"Raavan saathe shun le gayo?" Ravan was a miser. What did he take with Him ? And Karna koy gayo shun - What did Karna loose? Sampathi potlun bandhe vaikuntha na gayo koi - By taking all the riches no-one goes to Vaikuntha.

No one takes containers full of wealth along with them to Vaikuntha when they leave this world. Nothing. Also the word samaacaran in the above verse 3.26 means showing by practice. Learned person is one who  practically shows others  how to link with Krishna. Our behaviour will teach more than the wordsActions speak louder than words.  Jai Srila Prabhupada ki Jai.

I pray at the lotus feet of Srila Gurudev, that I understand the real purport of renunciation and practically apply the linking process in this life time.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
