Learn by Heart and Sing Very Nicely - Part 4

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva!

This mail is in continuation of transcription of our beloved spiritual master, HDG Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj's Bhagavatam class on the topic - "Learn by Heart and Sing Very Nicely". In this class Maharajji started with verse 3.8.7 from Srimad Bhagavatam

proktam kilaitad bhagavattamena / nivritti-dharmaabhirataaya tena
sanat-kumaaraaya sa caaha prishtah / saankhyaayanaayaanga dhrita-vrataaya

"Lord Sankarshana thus spoke the purport of Srimad Bhagavatam to the great sage Sanat-kumara, who had already taken the vow of renunciation. Sanat-kumara also, in his turn, when inquired of by Saankhyaayana Muni, explained Srimad Bhagavatam as he had heard it from Sankarshana."

"Purport by Srila Prabhupada, please hear.

This is the way of the parampara system. Although Sanat-kumara, the well-known great saintly Kumara, was in the perfect stage of life, still he heard the message of Srimad-Bhagavatam from Lord Sankarsana. Similarly, when he was questioned by Saankhyaayana Rsi, he spoke to him the same message he had heard from Lord Sankarsana. In other words, unless one hears from the proper authority one cannot become a preacher. In devotional service, therefore, two items out of the nine, namely hearing and chanting, are most important. Without hearing nicely, one cannot preach the message of Vedic knowledge."

While singing the invocation prayers, Gurudev said - "We come for the glorification of the Supreme Absolute truth, Krishna which is the perfection of our human existence and He should be glorified with beautiful prayers, nice kirtans and very selected verses from Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. Whenever you are free during the day, PLEASE, learn few verses and learn to sing them very nicely. The first verse is given by Srila Prabhupada is beautiful.

he krsna karuna sindhu / deena bandhu jagat pathe
gopeshaa gopikaa kaantha / radha kaantha namstu te

There is a beautiful verse in 10th chapter of Bhagavad-gita, verse number 12, it gives you 10 qualities of Krishna in twolines. In the whole world in so many so called scriptures, we will never find in two lines 10 qualities of Krishna. They talk of God, but they don't know what type of God they are talking about. Here in our preliminary spiritual science, the qualities are very nicely described. If you learn this one verse you can talk for the whole of your lifetime.

param brahma param dhaama / pavitram paramam bhavaan
purusham shaasvatam divyam / aadi-devam ajam vibhum

"You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest."

In this verse, there are nearly nine OMs in these two lines. And we have seen now OM is non-different from Krishna. So these verses are non-different from Krishna. Whenever we want to associate with the Supreme Lord, and we do always wish to associate, and that's why to some extent, we have left the material enjoyment; may not be fully, but to some extent we have controlled our selves. We have become austere. I saw that you were all up today before four o' clock. That is the best thing to see in our centers. We cannot sleep after four o' clock now. It has become our second nature. And this is how these austerities should be continued. And austerities on its own is useless. You know in India, they are very austere. For six months they stand on one leg, it's a big austerity. But that austerity on its own is useless. We getup before four'o clock and we glorify the Lord, and we study the scriptures. We chant our rounds very nicely. Chanting is the root. You sincerely chant your rounds, nobody can guard you whether you are doing sixteen rounds or not or whether you are doing it carefully or not. You have to be on your own guard. We don't have policemen in the compound of our temple that every policeman will be with you and look whether you are chanting or not. Aye bhakta, what is your name ?"

Bhakta: Das [Indistinct]

Maharajji: Oh jai, very nice Das. Das is chanting? Das, your name is Das?

Bhakta: Yes [Indistinct]

Maharajji: You are chanting alright? How much ?

Bhakta: [Indistinct]

Maharajji: "[Ha Ha laughs] no not this way. You must chant. Ok? Very nice. And the more you try, keep on chanting.Don't worry too much about the offences or this. You should keep on chanting. And as soon as you chant your rounds then you can get into these verses very nicely."

Krishna willing, I shall transcribe the remaining parts of Maharajji's class on this topic in the forthcoming mails. I pray to the lotus feet of the Gurudeva that i sincerely and thoroughly study, memorize and sing the verses from Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, wake up early, and chant sincerely.

Thank you very much.
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva,
Manohar Krishna Das,
