Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Mathajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This mail is in continuation of the series "Transcendental qualities of Lord Sri Rama - Part 2", based on the transcription of the wonderful class given by HG Vaijayanthi mala Mathaji on S.B.5.19.4.

In this verse 8 qualities of Lord Ramachandra is mentioned by Hanumanji.

1. Vishuddaanubhava-maatram - The Lord, whose pure form is uncontaminated by the modes of material nature, can be perceived by pure consciousness.
2. Ekam - one without a second.
3. Sva-tejasaa dhvasta-guna-vyavastham - by His own spiritual potency, vanquished the influence of the modes of material nature.
4. Pratyak - transcendental, not to be seen with material eyes.
5. Prashaantam - undisturbed by material agitation.
6. sudhiyopalambhanam - only in pure consciousness, or Krishna consciousness, can one perceive the transcendental form of the Lord.
7. Anaama-rupam - without a material name and form.
8. niraham - without a material ego.

We saw the first 2 qualities of Lord Rama as described by Hanumanji in the previous mail. In this mail we will see the next 2 qualities.

3. Sva-tejasaa dhvasta-guna-vyavastham - by His own spiritual potency, vanquished the influence of the modes of material nature.

Ravana is completely under the modes of nature. That is why he thought that he will carry Sita. When Sita was kept in Ashoka vana also, he tried so many tricks to convince her. But she was not at all pacified. That time Kumba Karna gave an idea to Ravana. He suggested Ravana to assume the form of Lord Rama. Ravana said if he wants to take the form of Rama, then he has to meditate on that form. If he starts meditating on that form, then he can see Sita as his mother only. The influence of all the material modes are completely vanquished just by thinking of the Lord.

In 6.4.29 of Srimad Bhagavatam the Lord is mentioned as guna-apaaya meaning the cause of the annihilation of everything made of the material modes of nature.

The Lord is the cause of destruction of the three modes of nature namely goodness, passion and ignorance. Maharaj says "just by singing one kirtan we are elevated". The name of the Lord is so powerful that it elevates us out of the modes.

The Lord says in B.G.14.26 "One who engages in full devotional service, unfailing in all circumstances, at once transcends the modes of material nature and thus comes to the level of Brahman". The person who acted in the role of Lord Rama has also changed his character. So the Lord by His own potency vanquished the influence of the modes of material nature. In the fifth chapter, Sundara-Kanda of Rama-carita-manasa there is a very nice verse.

shaantam shaashvatam aprameyam anagham
nirvaana-shaanti-pradam
brahma-shambhu-phanindras tebhyo 'nisham
vedaanta-vedyam vibhum
raamaakhyam jagad-ishvaram sura-gurum
maayaa maanushyam harim
vande 'ham karunaakaram raghu-varam
bhu-paala-cudaamani

It gives all the qualities of Lord Rama. Rama is peaceful, original, immeasurable, and completely sinless. We commit sins only when we are in the modes. When we are not in the modes then there is no question of performing any sinful activity. The example given here is Sun. The Sun's rays completely sterilizes the places which is contaminated with urine and stool. It doesn't mean the Sun become impure by evaporating the contamination. Same way Krishna takes away all our contamination, but He remains anagham (sinless). Although we are impure if we keep in touch with Krishna then we will become pure. Maharaj says "the only thing we have to do is to remain alive in Krishna Consciousness".

4. Pratyak - transcendental, not to be seen with material eyes.

In order to understand this we will see a pastime in Caaitanya Caritamrta. Caitanya Mahaprabhu went on a tour to Southern India. There He went to Madurai. There was a brahmana called Ramadasa vipra. He was a great devotee of Lord Rama. He invited Caitanya Mahaprabhu to his home for taking prasadam. Lord Caitanya accepted and told him to make the prasadam ready and He will take bath in Vaigai river and come. Lord went and took bath and came to his home. But the brahmana did not prepare any prasadam. Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked why he has not prepared any food. The brahmana said, "This is a forest. You cannot expect anything in this time. Lakshmana has gone in search for the vegetables and fruits. Once he comes, Sita will cook the food and then she will serve". This much of devotion he was having in reading the scripture Ramayana that he lost himself and had forgotten the very fact that he invited Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for prasadam. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was so much pleased by the involvement and devotion of this Brahmana. Then some how He convinced the brahmana to come to senses and to the reality. Then the Brahmana cooked simple prasadam and served the Lord. Mahaprabhu asked him to take prasadam. But he was fasting. Then Mahaprabhu asked the reason for his fasting. He said "Sita matha is Jaganmatha and she is Mahalakshmi. But this rascal Ravana touched and carried away. How can I take prasadam?" He was completely lost in the mood of Ramayana. Mahaprabhu said that he is learned vipra and have to consider things very nicely. Sita devi is the internal energy of the Lord. Nobody can even see Sita devi with material eyes. So no materialistic person got any power to even see her then what to talk about touching her. Ravana carried only maya Sita, not the original Sita. Spiritual substance is never within the jurisdiction of material conception. So with our arguments and logic we cannot understand the spiritual subject matters. In this way Mahaprabhu tried to convince him. But that brahmana was not completely convinced but in respect for Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu he took little prasadam. Then Mahaprabhu went for Rameswaram. There He could get a copy of Kurmapuran in which it is clearly mentioned that "Ravana carried only the maya Sita and the original Sita took the shelter of Fire God. When the war was over, Rama asked Sita to enter into fire. That time the Fire God gave back the original form and took away the maya form of Sita". Mahaprabhu is Krishna Himself. Whatever He says is true. But still He looked for the reference from the scriptures. He took that book and again went back to Madurai by walk to show this to Ramadasa vipra. Seeing that, brahmana jumped with joy. Then he made very nice prasadam and served Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

So with the material eyes we cannot see the Lord. In S.B.6.4.29 it is said that three things should be avoided to see Krishna.

1. Avoid material vibrations.
2. Avoid anything ascertained by material intelligence.
3. Avoid anything experienced by the material senses or concocted within the material mind.

Krishna willing, we will see the other qualities of Lord Sri Rama in the subsequent mails.

Thankyou very much.
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
