Dear Prabhujis and Matajis,

Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva

This is in continuation of the previous mail, posting a few of the points from the wonderful class taken by H.G. Svayam Sphurathy Krishna prabhu, on the constant remembrance of Lord Hari. Herein the reasons for us not being able to remember the Lord constantly are listed.

1.Our goal is not Krishna.

The Lord says in Bhagavad Gita 9.18

gatir bhartaa prabhuh saakshi / nivaasah sharanam suhrt
prabhavah pralayah sthaanam / nidhaanam beejam avyayam

I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge, and the most dear friend. I am the creation and the annihilation, the basis of everything, the resting place and the eternal seed.

We have so many goals in our life, but Krishna is not our goal. Whatever goal we set, our mind will always be thinking of the goal. Because we have not come to the conclusion that Krishna is our ultimate goal, our remembrance of the Lord is very meager.

2. We do not have the strong feeling that everything belongs to Krishna.

We always say that we are busy with household work, office work, and school work. If we really know that everything belongs to Krishna, then we will understand that everything is Krishna’s work. Krishna is missing in all these and this reflects our mentality. We do not have the feeling that our house belongs to Krishna or Krishna is the ultimate proprietor of wherever we are working. This is the reason we always make a distinction between our material activities and devotine ional activities whereas a devotee sees Krishna everywhere.

3. We do not work for the pleasure of Krishna.

Our objective is not to please Krishna. How many times do we think before any activity, ‘is this act going to please Krishna?’ Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 3.9

yajnaarthaat karmano ’nyatra / loko ’yam karma-bandhanah
tad-artham karma kaunteya / mukta-sangah samaacara

"Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be performed, otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage."

While doing work in the office our mind is always thinking of the pleasure of the boss. Our remembrance of the Lord appears like a flashlight for some moments and then disappears.

4.We do not realize or feel that ‘we have to go’.

Our beloved spiritual master, HDG Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj wants us to remember all the time, ‘mujhe jaanaa hai’. In most of the cases it is true that unless we have the fear of death, we will not have the feeling of detachment from the material world. Parikshit Maharaj says in Srimad Bhagavatam 1.19.14,

tasyaiva me ’ghasya paraavaresho
vyaasakta-cittasya grheshv abhikshnam
nirveda-mulo dvija-shaapa-rupo
yatra prasakto bhayam aashu dhatte

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, the controller of both the transcendental and mundane worlds, has graciously overtaken me in the form of a braahmana’s curse. Due to my being too much attached to family life, the Lord, in order to save me, has appeared before me in such a way that only out of fear I will detach myself from the world."

We have to leave this body and start another journey. When we go for a holiday, we plan so many things. But that journey is not a confirmed one and is subject to so many factors. But our journey after death is sure. But we do not think what can I carry when I leave this body ? What is going to be transferred to the next life? Chanting of the holy names is the only wealth we can carry and hence we should start accumulating that wealth.

5. We may even realize that we will die but we do not realize that we can die at any time.

Yamaraja has no holiday. This point does not sink into us and we waste our time without remembering the Lord, thinking that we will do it later.

6. We do not pray to Krishna to give His remembrance.

Our prayer sessions have been converted into begging sessions for material prosperity but we do no pray like what Srila Prabhupada wanted us to pray. Simply our prayer should be, My dear Krishna, please remind me to always chant Your Holy Name, please do not put me into forgetfulness. You are sitting within me as Supersoul, so you can put me into forgetfulness or into remembering You. So please do not put me into forgetfulness. Please always remind me to chant, even You send me into the hell, it doesn't matter, just so long as I can always chant Hare Krishna.

7.Our endeavors are not sincere in remembering Krishna. Srila Prabhupada says that the honey of chanting the holy names is within the remembrance of Krishna. We give up the battle before we fight. If we make a sincere endeavor, the Lord will definitely help us.

8. The less intake of the material energy will lead to greater output of the spiritual energy. This means that we have to cut down on eating, sleeping, mating and defending. Our material necessities are to be kept to the minimum. Because our intake of the material energy is more, our remembrance of the Lord is very little.

Prabhuji explained the effect of constant remembrance of the Lord from Srimad Bhagavatam and Krishna willing I shall try to post those points in the ensuing mail.

Thank you very much,
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
