Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Mathajis!

Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev!

Whenever any activity is done successfully, it is our general mentality to take credit for the successful execution of the activity. Srila Prabhupada in his purport to SB 2.9.30 explains this attitude as, "
Foolish men want to take credit for all creations made by them, but intelligent persons know very well that not a blade of grass can move without the will of the Lord; thus all the credit for wonderful creations must go to Him
." Hence whenever we feel that we have done something great, which our beloved Guru Maharaj says is all the time, it is important to remember the following verse spoken by Brahmaji in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.9.30

yaavat sakhaa sakhyur ivesha te krtah
prajaa-visarge vibhajaami bho janam
aviklavas te parikarmani sthito
maa me samunnaddha-mado ’ja maaninah

"O my Lord, the unborn, You have shaken hands with me just as a friend does with a friend [as if equal in position]. I shall be engaged in the creation of different types of living entities, and I shall be occupied in Your service. I shall have no perturbation, but I pray that all this may not give rise to pride, as if I were the Supreme."

In one of the classes here in Abudhabi, H.G. Svayam spurathy prabhuji referred to this important verse and I shall post a few of the points from his class.

Lord Brahma who appeared from the navel of the Supreme Lord and was seated on a lotus, could not find out the source of his lotus seat. He neither had the direction, nor did he understand the process of creation. Then as per the instruction of the Lord, he started performing penance. Pleased by the long penance performed by Brahmaji, the Lord manifested the eternal and transcendental form and His abode before Brahmaji. The Lord was very much satisfied with Brahma and He shook hands with him and accepted him as worthy to create living beings. At that time Brahmaji prayed that, "Please tell me so that I may be taught in the matter by the instruction of the Personality of Godhead and may thus act instrumentally to generate living entities, without being conditioned by such activities." Lord Brahma wanted to be saved from the pitfall of pride, although he was posted in the most exalted position within the universe. Then he offered the aforesaid prayer as in SB 2.9.30. Here we can see that Brahmaji is praying that the following three things may not give rise to pride, as if he were the supreme.

1.You have shaken hands with me just as a friend does with a friend as if equal in position. So let this not make me feel proud that I am also equal to You.

This is an important lesson for all of us. When somebody moves intimately with us, there is always the danger that this intimacy slowly leads to loss of respect for that person. While serving our spiritual master, this is an important pitfall to be avoided. While dealing with our God brothers and God sisters also, this tendency creeps in and we fail to offer proper respect due to them. Srimad Bhagavatam explains how Devahuti served her husband Kardama muni and it is said that "she served her husband with intimacy and great respect, with control of the senses, with love and with sweet words." Srila Prabhupada very wonderfully explains in his purport to SB 3.23.2 - "Here two words are very significant. Devahuti served her husband in two ways, vishrambhena and gauravena. These are two important processes in serving the husband or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Vishrambhena means “with intimacy,” and gauravena means “with great reverence.” The husband is a very intimate friend; therefore, the wife must render service just like an intimate friend, and at the same time she must understand that the husband is superior in position, and thus she must offer him all respect. Vishrambhena means “with intimacy,” but it must not be familiarity that breeds contempt."

We also find in Srimad Bhagavad Gita that Arjuna on seeing the Universal form of the Lord was so overwhelmed and he lamented for his previous behavior with Krishna as follows.

sakheti matvaa prasabham yad uktam / he krishna he yaadava he sakheti
ajaanataa mahimaanam tavedam / mayaa pramaadaat pranayena vaapi
yac caavahaasaartham asat-krto ’si / vihaara-shayyaasana-bhojaneshu
eko ’tha vaapy acyuta tat-samaksham / tat kshaamaye tvaam aham aprameyam

"Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You “O Krishna,” “O Yaadava,” “O my friend,” not knowing Your glories. Please forgive whatever I may have done in madness or in love. I have dishonored You many times, jesting as we relaxed, lay on the same bed, or sat or ate together, sometimes alone and sometimes in front of many friends. O infallible one, please excuse me for all those offenses."

If we do not observe the proper etiquette in our relationships and become proud then we may also have to lament for that.

2. I shall be engaged in the creation of different types of living entities. So I pray that let me not feel proud that I am the creator.

Srila Prabhupada writes in the purport to SB 2.9.30, "Factually Lord Brahma does not create the living entities. In the beginning of the creation he is empowered to give different bodily shapes to the living entities according to their work during the last millennium. Brahmaji’s duty is just to wake the living entities from their slumber and to engage them in their proper duty. The different grades of living entities are not created by Brahmaji by his capricious whims, but he is entrusted with the task of giving the living entities, different grades of body so that they can work accordingly. And still he is conscious that he is only instrumental, so that he may not think of himself as the Supreme Powerful Lord."

We cannot even imagine the magnitude of the job done by Brahmaji. Innumerable living entities are given different bodies according to their karma and that too perfectly without any mistake. Anybody who is undertaking this kind of responsibility is bound to feel proud of being entrusted with such position. A devotee who is empowered to spread the message of the Lord should always feel humble and pray like Brahmaji. Otherwise we feel that because of me so many people have become devotees. We do some little service and we feel that without me this service would not have been done so wonderfully. This pitfall should be avoided carefully by praying to the Lord.

3. I shall be occupied in your service. So let me not feel proud that since I am under your service, I am supermost and forget my own position.

Here Brahmaji is very clear not to forget his position and this is a very very important remembrance for all of us. In the material world, when we are directly engaged in the service of the president or the king or the prime minister, we feel so proud that I am in the service of the super most. When directly engaged in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, instead of feeling greatly fortunate and humble in the service, if we feel proud and misbehave, in no moment the Lord can withdraw the service privilege from us.

In his purport to SB 3.9.23, Srila Prabhupada gives us the secret of becoming dear to the Lord. "Brahma, who is only an assistant in the modes of creation, wanted to remain in his actual position as an instrument of the Lord instead of becoming puffed up by the false prestige of thinking himself the creator. That is the way of becoming dear to the Supreme Lord and receiving His benediction."

Let us constantly pray to the Lord in the way Brahmaji prayed so that we may also become dear to the Lord.

Thank you very much,
