Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev.
Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verse 3.22 that "O son of Prtha, there is no work prescribed for Me within all the three planetary systems. Nor am I in want of anything, nor have I a need to obtain anything and yet I am engaged in prescribed duties". And His words are followed by action when He leads by example in every respect to guide common people like us.
In the tenth canto there is a very interesting incident where Krishna and Balarama were residing at the school of their spiritual master, Sandipani Muni at Avantipura. To teach the proper way to respect one's guru, Krishna and Balarama served Their spiritual master with great devotion, as They would a Deity of the Supreme Lord Himself. Sandipani Muni, pleased by Their service, imparted to Them detailed knowledge of all the Vedas, together with their six corollaries and the Upanishads. Krishna and Balarama needed to hear each subject explained only once to assimilate it completely, and thus in sixty-four days They learnt the sixty-four traditional arts. Before taking leave of Their guru, the two Lords offered Sandipani Muni any gift he desired. The wise Sandipani, seeing Their amazing prowess, requested that They bring back his son, who had died in the ocean at Prabhaasa. Krishna and Balarama mounted a chariot and went to Prabhaasa, where They approached the shore and worshiped the presiding deity of the ocean. Krishna asked the ocean to return His spiritual master's son, and the Lord of the ocean replied that a demon dwelling within the ocean named Paancajana had taken the boy away. Hearing this, Shri Krishna entered the ocean, killed that demon and took the shell that had grown from his body. But when Krishna did not find His guru's son within the demon's belly, He went to the planet of Yamaraja, the Lord of death. Yamaraja came forward when he heard Krishna blow the Paancajanya conchshell and devotedly worshiped Him. Lord Krishna then asked Yamaraja for Saandipani Muni's son, and Yamaraja immediately gave the boy to the two Lords.
Krishna and Balarama then returned to Their spiritual master and presented him with his son, requesting him to choose yet another favor. But Sandipani Muni replied that by having obtained disciples such as Them, all his desires were fulfilled. He thus instructed Them to return home.
Just like Krishna and Balarama did not hesitate to fulfill the desires of Their spiritual master, Brahmaji also unhesitatingly followed the order of his spiritual master - the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna to do tapa and underwent penances for one thousand years by the calculations of the demigods.
Srimad Bhagavatam 2.9.7:
nishamya tad-vaktr-didrkshayaa disho
vilokya tatraanyad apashyamaanah
svadhishnyam aasthaaya vimrshya tad-dhitam
tapasy upaadishta ivaadadhe manah
"When he heard the sound, he tried to find the speaker, searching on all sides. But when he was unable to find anyone besides himself, he thought it wise to sit down on his lotus seat firmly and give his attention to the execution of penance, as he was instructed."
Srila Prabhupada mentions in the purport to the above verse that "To achieve success in life, one should follow the example of Lord Brahma, the first living creature in the beginning of creation. After being initiated by the Supreme Lord to execute tapasya, he was fixed in his determination to do it, and although he could not find anyone besides himself, he could rightly understand that the sound was transmitted by the Lord Himself. Brahma was the only living being at that time because there was no other creation and none could be found there except himself."
Further Srila Prabhupada states in the purport to verse 2.9.8 that "One should be qualified enough to discern such transcendental potency, and either by discriminating or by fortunate chance if one is able to receive the transcendental sound from the bonafide spiritual master, his path of liberation is guaranteed. The disciple, however, must be ready to execute the order of the bonafide spiritual master as Lord Brahma executed the instruction of his spiritual master, the Lord Himself. Following the order of the bonafide spiritual master is the only duty of the disciple, and this complete faithful execution of the order of the bona fide spiritual master is the secret of success."
Similarily, in our lives too we should try to emulate the examples set by the Lord Himself, the great mahajana Brahma and Srila Prabhupada, within the limitations of our capabilities, time, place and circumstances. We should try to give up the habit of procrastination or trying to do things the easy way by some short cut method. Srila Prabhupada has already laid down the short cut method for us. Now our only job is to adjust our lives and "fit in" by associating with Srila Prabhupada's books and success is guaranteed.
We humbly pray to the lotus feet of our spiritual master to give us the intelligence and strength to follow his simple instructions (desires) unhesitatingly.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
Gopalkrishna das and Prasannalakshmi devi dasi
