Glories of Vrtrasura - Part 2

Glories of Vrtrasura - Part 2

Manohar Suvarna

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the offering titled, "Glories of Vrtrasura". In the previous offering we have learnt the cause and purpose of appearance of great devotee Vrtrasura in the form of a demon. Today, we will meditate on Krishna's message to demigods who wants protection.

2. Krishna's Message: Indra along with demigods offers several prayers to Lord Krishna. They remembered various incarnations that Lord performed for the welfare of human beings such as Matsya, Parasurama, Nrsimhadeva, Varaha, Kurma, Rama and Krishna. Pleased by their prayers, Lord appeared before them in four-handed form. Thereafter, demigods meekly surrendered to Lord for protection, requested Lord to kill Vrtrasura who had swallowed all their weapons, their paraphernalia for fighting, and their strength and influence. Below is the purifying and inspiring glorification of Lord in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.9.45

hamsaaya dahra nilayaaya nirikshakaaya
krsnaaya mrshta yashase nirupakramaaya

sat-sangrahaaya bhava paantha nijaashramaaptaav

ante parishta-gataye haraye namas te

"O Lord, O supreme pure, You live within the core of everyone's heart and observe all the desires and activities of the conditioned souls. O Supreme Personality of Godhead known as Lord Krishna, Your reputation is bright and illuminating. You have no beginning, for You are the beginning of everything. This is understood by pure devotees because You are easily accessible to the pure and truthful. When the conditioned souls are liberated and sheltered at Your lotus feet after roving throughout the material world for many millions of years, they attain the highest success of life. Therefore, O Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, we offer our respectful obeisances at Your lotus feet."

Lord Krishna was pleased with the prayers of demigods. However, before guiding demigods to Dadici Muni, Lord gives very important message to the demigods. Lord says that it is true that nothing is difficult for one to obtain if Lord is pleased. But pure devotee who fixes his mind on Krishna does not ask for anything but an opportunity to engage in devotional service. Those who think material assets to be everything or to be the ultimate goal of life are called misers [krpanas]. They do not know the ultimate necessity of the soul. Moreover, if one awards that which is desired by such fools, he must also be considered foolish.

The above message of Krishna to His devotees is perpetual truth.  This message is also applicable for struggling devotees like us. He calls us fools, as we are all keen on multiplying our assets. Demigods are hundreds of times better than us because in times of crisis, they remember Lord and glorify Him. They have occupied their position due to thousand of years penance and austerity. Our desires are endless. We irritate Lord every now and then. We annoy Him with our nonsensical actions. We are into devotional service but cannot forgo material enjoyment. We plead Lord to be merciful for our sense enjoyment. We are not consistent in our sadhana. Above all, we fail to control our mind and senses. So it is very important for us to remember Krishna's message and mold our life accordingly.

Krishna willing, we will learn more about demon devotee Vrtrasura in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,

Manohar Suvarna,
