Pride and Humility - Part 1

Sudarshana devi dasi

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The following is a humble effort to transcribe a conversation between our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj and a devotee about pride and humility.

Maharaj: Srila Prabhupada is a very practical person. Once when he was describing the four varnas and ashramas devotees asked him, "Which ashram you belong to?, which varna you belong to?". He said - "fifth class". He never claimed that he was first class. That is the sign of uttama adhikari. There was not a dint of pride in him. Otherwise you are completely lost. Because as soon as the pride is there, arrogance is there. When you are proud the scrap comes out of your mouth. The pride flows out of your mouth and you will be arrogant. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 16.4, dambho darpo 'bhimaanash ca / krodhah paarushyam eva ca - dambha, darpa, abhimaan and krodh anger -  harsh speech. As soon as you are angry, your speech is harsh. You don't know what is coming out of your mouth, to whom you are talking, you completely lose your balance - ajnaanam caabhijaatasya / paartha sampadam aasurim - These are the demoniac qualities.

There are six qualities and they should be remembered very nicely so that in our dreams also we should not be proud of anything. Pride clings on to anything. (Referring to a devotee Maharaj says) He has a nice bald head and he will think, "What a nice head I have!". This one will think, "Oh What is this bushy head?". I am wearing saffron clothes. So even for that I might think I am great. So pride comes and pride clings for anything. Our face may be like a monkey. But in the mirror we adjust our eyes and tell, "How beautiful it is ! All these faces are rubbish. My face is beautiful!" We are proud. Actually if somebody sees our face, he will run away. But we glorify it and stand before the mirror for hours together. That is why our temples have minimum mirrors. At the maximum we can see our forehead to put the tilak.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more from Maharaj on pride and humility in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
