Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous topic titled, "Glories of Vrtrasura". In the previous five offerings, we have learnt

1. The cause and purpose of appearance of great devotee Vrtrasura.
2. Lord's instruction to demigods for the protection.
3. Fight till the end.
4. Fair Dealings.
5. Fearless of death.

Today, we will continue to meditate on the glorious nature of Vrtrasura.

6. Courage is monopoly of devotee: After expressing fearlessness of the death, readiness to give up body and accept dust from the lotus feet of his spiritual master, Sri Narada Muni, great Vrtrasura reminds Indra to fight. Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.11.19 about Vrtrasura's call to Indra is worth meditating

sureśa kasmān na hinoṣi vajraṁ puraḥ sthite vairiṇi mayy amogham
mā saṁśayiṣṭhā na gadeva vajraḥ syān niṣphalaḥ kṛpaṇārtheva yācñā

O King of the demigods, since I, your enemy, am standing before you, why don't you hurl your thunderbolt at me? Although your attack upon me with your club was certainly useless, like a request of money from a miser, the thunderbolt you carry will not be useless. You need have no doubts about this.

Here, we see that Indra was hesitating to fight with Vrtrasura. Despite being blessed by Lord Himself and despite being holder of thunderbolt made from great rshi Dadici's austere bone, Indra was bewildered. This is the condition of living entity in the material world. Our mentality is also like that of Indra. Although we read Bhagavad Gita, and Srimad Bhagavatam, although we hear Krishna katha, chant holy names and preach Krishna consciousness to others, at times of crisis, our faith stumbles and we get completely bewildered. This is because, we are not fully engaged in Krishna consciousness. Indra committed series of sins in an attempt to save himself from the wrath of his spiritual master. Like Indra we want our position to be secured and we go to any extent to safeguards our interest.

Vrtrasura's attack on Indra is punishment for his sins. On one side, we see Indra fighting battle to get back his heavenly kingdom for sense gratification. On the other side, we see a great duty bound Vrtrasura who is not interested in sense gratification. He reminds Indra not to use club and use only thunderbolt to kill him. Vrtrasura eliminates Indra's doubt by his encouraging words. In his wonderful purport to above verse Srila Prabhupada writes that, "Vrtrasura, however, being a Vaishnava, assured Indra that the thunderbolt would not fail, for Vrtrasura knew that it had been prepared in accordance with the instructions of Lord Vishnu. Although Indra had doubts because he could not understand that Lord Vishnu's order never fails, Vrtrasura understood Lord Vishnu's purpose. Vrtrasura was eager to be killed by the thunderbolt manufactured according to Lord Vishnu's instructions because he was sure that he would thus return home, back to Godhead." H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says that courage is the monopoly of Krishna conscious devotee.

From the above verse, we can see this wonderful quality in Vrtrasura, who is also giving courage even to the person who is going to kill him.

Krishna willing, we will learn more about the glories of Vrtrasura in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
