Being Consistent

Sudarshana devi dasi

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

Lord Krishna very nicely says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.9.36,

etāvad eva jijñāsyaṁ tattva-jijñāsunātmanaḥ
anvaya-vyatirekābhyāṁ yat syāt sarvatra sarvadā

A person who is searching after the Supreme Absolute Truth, the Personality of Godhead, must certainly search for it up to this, in all circumstances, in all space and time, and both directly and indirectly.

The word sarvatra means 'in all space and time' and sarvadaa means 'in all circumstances'. There should not be any voluntary breaks in our service. For example, sun always rises in the east every morning without fail. Whether it is prescribed duty or devotional service, during the initial period, there is lot of eagerness and enthusiasm to do the service. But after some time, being entangled in the material modes, we slowly loose the taste and vigour to do the service. But in reality the taste of service increases only by doing it consistently and continuously and not by taking breaks. This consistency is very important quality which we need to imbibe in our lives. If we are not consistent in our prescribed duties or even in devotional service, then not only do we suffer, but also become a source of disturbance to others. When we are inconsistent, people lose trust and thus the relationship with other living entities also becomes strained. But when we are consistent in our duties and service, then not only are we self-satisfied, the trust developed will help and nourish the relationship between the living entities.

Some time ago we received the following amazing real story about a lizard. In order to renovate the house, a man in Japan broke open the wall. Japanese houses normally have a hollow space between the wooden walls. While tearing down the walls, he found that there was a lizard stuck there because a nail from outside hammered into one of its feet. He saw that and felt pity and at the same time curious as when he checked the nail it was nailed 10 years ago when the house was first built. What happened? The lizard had survived in such position for 10 years. In a dark wall partition for 10 years, without moving, it seemed impossible and mind-boggling. Then he wondered how the lizard had survived for 10 years, without moving a step, since its foot was nailed. So he stopped his work and observed the lizard, what it has been doing and how it has been eating. After some time, another lizard appeared there suddenly with food in its mouth and the man was stunned and touched deeply. For the lizard that was stuck by nail, another lizard has been feeding it for the past 10 years! It has been doing that untiringly for 10 years!

This consistent service attitude is a wonderful quality which we should learn from this lizard. But unfortunately, now-a-days even when our own near and dear ones fall sick, we try to take care of them for few days or so. But if the disease is chronic or prolonged, then we become negligent in our service to them and start cribbing to continue with service. Not only for prescribed duties even in devotional service we must always be consistent. The Supreme Lord out of His causeless mercy, is always consistently taking care of our welfare, life after life even when we don't deserve.  What will be our condition if Lord's agents like sun, moon and air take a break in their service?  So how much careful and consistent we should be in our service to Him ? Our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says that we should not be just festival devotees or week-end devotees. But we should always be consistent in our sadhana, mangala arati, chanting the Holy Names, study of scriptures.  When we sincerely endeavour to do the service consistently then pleased by our efforts Guru and Krishna will help us to service nicely.

I pray at the lotus feet of Srila Gurudev and Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna so that I cultivate and practise this quality of consistency.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
