Srila Prabhupada Patramrta - Part 3

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of previous offering "Prabhupada Patramrta" wherein we were meditating on one of the nectarean letters of Srila Prabhupada written to Sally Mataji on November 13 1965. We shall see further.

Srila Prabhupada had extended his VISA upto April 1966. He wanted to publish some more books before leaving. There was also ship of Scindia Navigation returning to India on the 17th November 1965 from New York. He was not sure as to what Krishna's plan was. In those days, His Divine Grace did not have the luxury of the modern day technological advancements in terms of communication like Internet, email, mobile, online money transfer etc. Prabhupada had to communicate to the book sellers by letters or telephone and then after posting the books to them, he had to wait to hear back from them and then get the amount transferred to him, once they received the books. Inspite of all this long time consuming process, he was single-handedly, patiently trying his best to reach out to different booksellers in cities like Los Angeles and California with great determination. His Divine Grace further writes,

"So I am not very fixed up what to do or not. The first consideration is that I must be in New York at least for ten to fifteen days more for deciding the publication affair and then I may leave this place for India or California. But the place where I am living now has so many inconveniences which I do not wish to narrate in this small letter. Yes I am taking my meals once only for this inconvenience. In the evening I take some milk and fruit and nowadays the night being very long, I feel sometimes for this night starvation."

We were reminded of the below lines which we learnt in childhood.

The heights of great men reached and kept,
were not attained by sudden flight.
But they when their companions slept,
Went toiling up in the night

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.7.44 Sukadev Goswami while explaining the pastime of churning of milk ocean, very nicely glorifies Lord Shiva who drank poison voluntarily to save other living entities.

tapyante loka-tāpena sādhavaḥ prāyaśo janāḥ
paramārādhanaṁ tad dhi puruṣasyākhilātmanaḥ

It is said that great personalities almost always accept voluntary suffering because of the suffering of people in general. This is considered the highest method of worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is present in everyone's heart.

In his matchless purport to the above verse Srila Prabhupada says, "If one tries to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world, he should be understood to be performing the best welfare activity. The Lord is automatically very pleased with him. If the Lord is pleased with him, what is left for him to achieve? If one has been recognized by the Lord, even if he does not ask the Lord for anything, the Lord, who is within everyone, supplies him whatever he wants."

Srila Prabhupada practised whatever he preached, whatever he wrote. He lives in his purports and led a life also according to whatever he wrote in these purports. We can see how may hardships and austerities His Divine Grace has gone through in those initial periods. Every time we go to temple or attend any satsang, we are getting plate full of prasadam - which is simply due to the mercy of this great paramahamsa. May we always remember the great sacrifices His Divine Grace has made and be grateful to him.

Krishna willing we shall continue to meditate more on the nectarean letters of His Divine Grace in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
