The Supreme Sweet Will - Part 2

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in conclusion of the previous offering, "The Supreme Sweet Will" wherein we were meditating on the verse 1.13.43 from Srimad Bhagavatam.

yathā krīḍopaskarāṇāṁ saṁyoga-vigamāv iha
icchayā krīḍituḥ syātāṁ tathaiveśecchayā nṛṇām

As a player sets up and disperses his playthings according to his own sweet will, so the supreme will of the Lord brings men together and separates them.

The Supreme Lord is the player and we are all his playthings. Now a question might arise that according to our actions good/bad Lord is bound to give good/bad results. So how can he be compared to a player? Srila Prabhupada very nicely mentions in the purport to the above verse, "The example of a player and his playthings should not be misunderstood. One may argue that since the Lord is bound to award the reactionary results of our own actions, the example of a player cannot be applied. But it is not so. We must always remember that the Lord is the supreme will, and He is not bound by any law. Generally the law of karma is that one is awarded the result of one's own actions, but in special cases, by the will of the Lord, such resultant actions are changed also. But this change can be affected by the will of the Lord only, and no other. Therefore, the example of the player cited in this verse is quite appropriate, for the Supreme Will is absolutely free to do whatever He likes, and because He is all-perfect, there is no mistake in any of His actions or reactions. These changes of resultant actions are especially rendered by the Lord when a pure devotee is involved. It is assured in the Bhagavad-Gita (9.30-31) that the Lord saves a pure devotee who has surrendered unto Him without reservation from all sorts of reactions of sins, and there is no doubt about this. There are hundreds of examples of reactions changed by the Lord in the history of the world. If the Lord is able to change the reactions of one's past deeds, then certainly He is not Himself bound by any action or reaction of His own deeds. He is perfect and transcendental to all laws."

In this regard, we remember an article shared by a devotee many years ago. Before coming to Krishna consciousness, while studying in college, he was addicted to drugs. But somehow in his campus he came across devotees, distributing books and prasadam. Though he hardly cared for their philosophy whenever he met them, he used to offer whatever little lakshmi he had to them. Slowly he started chanting one round. But he had not yet given up his addiction to drugs. One night the cops came to his room and he was put in jail as they could locate so many packets of drugs in his room. On the day of judgement, helplessly he was chanting and praying to Krishna, "My dear Lord, if you please save me this time, then I vow to surrender unto you for the whole of my life and never ever touch these drugs again." As the Judge was going through his record, the devotee just continued chanting on his beads and to his utter surprise the judge spoke, "This person is always chanting. So he appears to be innocent. I free him of all charges and he can be released." With joyful heart, he went straight to the temple and dedicated his life to Krishna from that day onwards and served their Lordship till the end of his life. Although he had been leading a sinful life in the beginning, Lord mercifully chose not to give him the full reaction for all the sins, but considering his repentant heart and sincere prayers Lord as per his Supreme sweet will, forgave him and gave him an opportunity for eternal blissful life.

Likewise there are instance wherein we find pure devotees of the Lord going through so many tribulations. The Lord out of His Supreme will sometimes lets his pure devotees undergo such difficult situations just for their future glorification - just to show the world as to how much tolerant and devoted are His devotees. So may we always remember that everything is happening as per His Supreme Sweet will and definitely there are no mistakes in the actions of the Infallible Lord.

Hare Krishna.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Kalacakra Krsna das & Sudarshana devi dasi.
