Our Dearmost Companion

Dear Prabhujis and Matajis,
Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

I wanted to share this beautiful note written by H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in his diary.

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare
iti sodaśakam nāmnām kali-kalmaśa-nāsanam
nāta parataropāya sarva-vedeśu drśyate

Devotees live with the scriptures. Individual verses are like living personalities who guide us as our well-wishing friends. Of all the millions of Sanskrit verses comprising the Vedic literature, this verse, the Hare Krishna mantra is the dearmost companion of all. It is the supreme well-wisher, and He is every devotee's special protector. This verse is for all seasons, for all moods.

While Maharaj would always ask us to deeply study the verses from the shastras and memorize them, he would also warn us of not getting into the mood of dry scholars. He would always request us to lovingly study the verses, with the conviction that they are non-different from Krishna.

Many years ago, once Maharaj was taking class on the verse SB 1.6.25 for almost 4 months. Every day in the Bhagavatam class though we would ready different verses, he would round up and come back again to this same verse. Every time he would give different dimensions/realizations on this sloka. Anybody who would call Maharaj and express their sufferings, Maharaj would ask them to read this verse and give them nice practical solution based on this verse. Though the problem was different for different people, Maharaj's medicine would be the same - SB 1.6.25. And interestingly all of them either got rid of their problem completely or their sufferings were at least largely mitigated.

When I told this point to one of our devotee friend, he asked me, "How is it possible that you can give the same sloka as the solution for all different problems? Each situation, circumstance, etc is different." I responded by referring to the mood of Maharaj. He never saw those verses as verses. He actually saw them as Krishna Himself. That is why he was able to give it as a universal solution for all problems.

It is not only this verse, but if we have full faith in the instructions of the shastras and see those verses as 'Krishna' and not as mere verses for us to understand and prove a point to someone, then we will obtain the complete benefit of these verses in the shastras.

Let us pray to the Supreme Lord to give us that vision to see all the transcendental verses as non-different from Krishna, our dearmost companion.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Kalacakra Krsna das.
