I Have to Go - Part 10

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The following is humble effort to transcribe one of the nectarean initiation lectures given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.35 in the year 2002. In the previous offering Maharaj insisted on the importance of putting ourselves in others' shoes and feel their pain.

Now we shall hear from Maharaj.

9. Importance of Chanting specified rounds of Japa:
Maharaj: Anything else you want to ask, anything? You people are all elevated. (Maharaj laughs) Then regarding this chanting, again you please remember, you know there is a nice verse from Varah Puran. I have written the translation please repeat the translation. First verse. (Maharaj recites the verse and devotees repeat after him.)  yastu bhagavato bhutvā  na grnāti ganitrkām, ganitrkām means - japa mala. That is ganitrkām. yastu bhagavato bhutvā na grnāti ganitrkām

As soon as you become devotee and you don't accept the japa mala, this is what it is said - then what happens? āsuris - 'that diksha is āsuris', he said.  āsuris tasya dikshā tu na sa dharmāya vidyate. This is how Prabhupada always insisted that you should take the japa mala and he insisted that 16 rounds, you must chant because without ganitrkām na sa dharmāya vidyate.  It is not very connected with the principles of religion. yastu bhagavato bhutvā na grnāti ganitrkām.  Varah Puran -  it's very authoritative you know.

yastu bhagavato bhutvā na grnāti ganitrkām
āsuris tasya dikshā tu na sa dharmāya vidyate

And if you chant then what happens? ganitrkām grahitvāyo - those who accepted the japa beads, ganitrkām grahitvāyo mantram cintayet budhah, those intelligent persons who constantly chant the Mahamantra, mantram cintayet budhah, janmāntara sahasrāni,  for thousand of his lives. He says, "If he accepts ganitrkām - japa mala and if he chants then, janmāntara sahasrāni cinto ham ca tena vai, I always worry about him for 1000 of life times."

ganitrkām grahitvāyo mantram cintayet budhah
janmāntara sahasrāni cinto ham ca tena vai

And this is how we should understand one thing that devotional activity, like water they have a tendency to infiltrate. These ceremonies we have performed here, don't be under illusion that this will be forgotten. It will always infiltrate, because young ones are here. The boys are here. They know ceremony is going on. Eventually they will perform the same type of ceremony and they will try to give to the future generations. So generation after generation it will filter. If at the moment he is young, he is going to be grandfather very soon (laughter). This flat will be very small. Our Padmasambhava is facing this. Very soon he is building another building (laughter). So these generations are to be taken care of. As soon as you follow, janmāntara sahasrāni cinto ham ca tena vai. "It is definitely I remember him for 1000 of lives." And this is the meaning of 1000s of lives. The whole generation is uplifted and we don’t know that. These are the effects of these activities.

Other activities may end, material activities may end, our bodies are also going to end. But, this will survive, this is eternal activity. So, any time we get to chance, so please come together and have some program at least. That we call  'Nāmhatta" programs. For some sacrifice you know the priests just burns some ghee and it has a great effect, because this younger generation, they may not remember bhajans or kirtans or this but, this program they will remember. Very nice decorations we have. Please always you carry on these activities. May Lord bless you and give us intelligence to carry on these things.

Please repeat the translation. "After becoming a devotee or engaging in devotional service to the Lord, if one does not accept a Japa mala his initiation is considered to be demoniac. This type of initiation is not very beneficial for religious principles. If one chants on his beads properly I, the Supreme Personality of Godhead remember this intelligent person for thousand of lives, thousand of births. In other words I reward him perfection."

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequnent offering.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Advaita Bhargava,
