Control Your Senses - Part 7

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The following is continuation of the transcription of one of the nectarean Bhagavatam class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 7.6.9 in Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav dham, Rajkot on 26th October 2008. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj the below point

1. Be pure to approach the Supreme Pure.
2. We have to leave.
3. Attachment leads to Anger
4. Control your senses.
5. Be Attached to Krishna.
6. Lack of Self-control leads to Material Bondage

Now we shall hear further.

7. Senses must be regulated
(Gurudev made the devotees repeat the translation of Srimad Bhagavatam verse 5.1.17 again and again and then continued) Even if he goes from forest to forest, one who is not self-controlled must always fear material bondage because he is living with six co-wives — the mind and knowledge-acquiring senses. Even householder life, however, cannot harm a self-satisfied, learned man who has conquered his senses.

Gurudev: (Gurudev laughs) See five senses and the mind – these are with us only, knowledge acquiring senses.  śrotraṁ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṁ ca rasanaṁ ghrāṇam eva ca – these all are knowledge acquiring senses. We cannot keep these senses aside and go to Dwarka or Vrindavan. You go to Vrindavan, but your mind is with you only.  If it is not controlled, then you will do sin in Vrindavan also and here also. They are not controlled. It's not the land, tract of land matters but it's your condition that matters.

(Jokingly chastising a devotee who was unsteady Maharaj says) Please, Please and then if you have progressed in devotion, then since four years you are there, then where your devotion has gone? Is that become doubled, tripled. Where is it now? Marriage, marriage, that's it. He wants to do marriage and that too in Vrindavan. He feels this is very highly elevation situation. No, it is not.  Marriage is marriage only.  Be it in Dwaraka or in Vrindavan. This is madness, because we just stick to something which is not really possible for everybody.  He forcefully pulls everyone there (Vrindavan).  He doesn’t have even enough space to stay,  a room of 13 feet by 13 feet. How this shall work man?  If you are located in some ashram (guest house or some place to stay) and you have some facilities, then it is okay and you may do some devotion.  But such uncontrolled life?!

It is better to be at home and be controlled. That is the meaning of this. Any ashram can benefit you, provided you are controlled. If you are uncontrolled then any ashram, no ashram can benefit you.  In sannyas also, if you are uncontrolled, then you cannot have any benefit. rasa indriya, grhastha, if they are controlled, they are quiet alright.  vidheyatma, in Bhagavad Gita this word is there. rāga-dveṣa-vimuktais tu, it should be 50, two, Ah!

Devotee:  Verse 64 of Chapter 2

Gurudev: Ah! rāga-dveṣa-vimuktais tu viṣayān indriyaiś caran ātma-vaśyair, ātma-vaśyair, you should bring all the senses under control, ātma-vaśyair vidheyātmā, those who follow the regulated life their senses are correct. So, ātma-vaśyair vidheyātmā, ātma-rater budhasya, Ah! jitendriyasyātma-rater budhasya, gṛheṣu pumān saktam, these, all these things are same. So Bhagavatam explains more elaborately, but the principles are same. So wherever you are your senses must be vidheyātmā, regulated. And again in the regulated freedom also, it depends upon what ashram you are following. And in the ashrams also, what Kṛṣṇa has given you the condition, that is more important.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna
Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
