Control Your Senses - Part 9

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The following is continuation of the transcription of one of the nectarean Bhagavatam class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 7.6.9 in Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav dham, Rajkot on 26th October 2008. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj about the importance of conquering our senses. Now we shall hear further.

8. Conquer your senses:
Gurudev: Prabhupada that verse, gives that verse, I think later, I think, I think eleventh canto, ko ’nv arthaḥ sukhayaty enaṁ, (Srimad Bhagavatam 11.10.20)

ko 'nv arthaḥ sukhayaty enaṁ kāmo vā mṛtyur antike
āghātaṁ nīyamānasya vadhyasyeva na tuṣṭi-daḥ

The, the meaning is ko 'nv arthaḥ sukhayaty enaṁ, āghātaṁ nīyamānasya, na tuṣṭi-daḥ - the man is condemned to death. Some criminal is condemned to death. Then, condemned to death means he has to hanged on next Sunday. So that man will not be interested anywhere. You give him million dollars, will he, will he be happy? "Forget about it," he says, "I am going." If you marry him, will he be happy? No. "Forget about it. I am going." House, no, nothing, nothing will satisfy. That is the way to conquer our senses. We have to die. When we are dying, we don't know. But we are also condemned. The day is not definite. So we shouldn't be unnecessarily stuck with this, with this material paraphernalia. That's the way to understand it.

Otherwise you will be in miserable condition. By following the wrong path you can never have right conclusions. And we want that. By following the wrong path, we want to have the right conclusion. And mind is material. It will give you tricks. And we fall prey to the tricks of mind. Don't fall prey to tricks of mind. But mind will give you arguments to convince you that you are doing the correct. And you are not doing correct. That is the materialistic mind. And materialistic mind is always destruction. The mind, we should tell the mind what to do and not the mind to tell us what to do. That is austere, austere part. Mind wants to sleep so you tell him to get up. That is, that is the austere part. Otherwise if you are under the control of the mind, then finish gone.

This is the messages of these two, three verses please. And not only two, three verses. But all these cantos, are driving to this point. And once you cross over this, jitendriya, the first word in (the third line of) this verse (Srimad Bhagavatam 5.1.17), in this bhayaṁ pramattasya third line, jitendriyasyātma-rater budhasya, three words together. jitendriya is number one. So priority is there. The priority is jitendriya, to conquer your senses. And then you will be ātma-rater, you will be definitely attracted to Kṛṣṇa. And if you do these two things then budha, you are intelligent.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna

Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
