Srila Prabhupada Patramrta - Part 14

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Srila Prabhupada Patramrta" wherein we are meditating on the letters written by Srila Prabhupada to the

1) Ministry of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs - letter dated 20 March 1961
2) Indian President Dr. RadhaKrishnan - letter dated 29 March 1961
3) Brijratanji and Scindia Steam Navigation Company - letters dated 31 March 1961.
4) Mr. Toshihiro Nakano, Secretary General of International Foundation for Cultural Harmony, Japan - letter dated April 1 1961.

He was requesting them to arrange for his travel to Japan to  in the conference arranged by "International Foundation for Cultural Harmony". Now we shall see further .

Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verse 3.21

yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas  tat tad evetaro janaḥ
sa yat pramāṇaṁ kurute  lokas tad anuvartate

Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.

In the above verse Srila Prabhupada translated the word śreṣṭhas as respectable leader. His Divine Grace explains in the purport to above verse that, "The king or the executive head of a state, the father and the school teacher are all considered to be natural leaders of the innocent people in general. All such natural leaders have a great responsibility to their dependents; therefore they must be conversant with standard books of moral and spiritual codes."

There is also a saying - yathaa raaja tathaa prajaa. So if the ruling class takes to God consciousness seriously, the citizens would also follow easily. So Srila Prabhupada always wanted to somehow create this awakening in the ruling class. Since he was above all designations of caste, country etc - he freely distributed this knowledge not only amidst Indian leaders, but he even wrote letters to two Mayors in Japan informing them in detail about the purpose of his visit. Appreciating the efforts of the Japanese organisers, His Divine Grace expressed his desire to meet the Mayors also personally during his visit. He was eagerly waiting to distribute Krishna consciousness to every one.

Letter dated 15 April 1961 to Mayors in Japan:

"I am very glad that some of your noble countrymen have taken notice of this defective civilization and have very timely invited this important congress with a future idea of forming an international body like the United Nations Organization not for conflict but for HARMONY. I am very glad to know this and I am anxious to meet you and render my full cooperation in this great, important and noble endeavour for welfare of the entire human society. I hope this noble movement will unite the communists and the capitalists alike for the common goal of life which still remained veiled for want sufficient intelligent class of men.... Lord Buddha happened to be an Indian and we worship Him as incarnation of Godhead. His holy name is mentioned in the Vedic literature like Bhagavata. We can take help from the Bhagavata the cream and ripen fruit of the Vedic literature and stop at once the quarrel and turmoil of the present world."

Buddhism was already one of the religions in Japan. So Prabhupada to help the Mayors connect to his message in a better manner, mentions about Lord Buddha also in his letter.

Krishna willing we shall try to meditate more on His Divine Grace's attempts to travel to Japan in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi
