Bolo Krishna Bhajo Krishna - Part 4

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is continuation of the previous topic titled, "Bolo Krishna Bhajo Krishna" wherein we were trying to meditate on the instructions given by our scriptures like Gita and Bhagavatam on what we should talk with others. In the previous offering we saw from seed verse of Bhagavatam as to how anything which is not in relation to Krishna is all maya and so how we need to be always alert in not wasting our time and energy in such things.

Now we shall see further.

4. Power of Silence: It is said that speech is silver and silence is gold. Particularly in messy situations, our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj always advices us that we should keep our mouth shut. We all might have experienced that how by not practicing vāco vegam, we end up in more and more miserable situations. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.16.6 the sages of Naimsharanya very nicely say

athavāsya padāmbhoja-makaranda-lihāṁ satām
kim anyair asad-ālāpair āyuṣo yad asad-vyayaḥ

The devotees of the Lord are accustomed to licking up the honey available from the lotus feet of the Lord. What is the use of topics which simply waste one’s valuable life?

In his unparalleled purport to the above verse His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada says, "Our duration of life is not very long, and there is no certainty of when we shall be ordered to leave everything for the next stage. Thus it is our duty to see that not a moment of our life is wasted in topics which are not related with Lord Kṛṣṇa. Any topic, however pleasant, is not worth hearing if it is devoid of its relation to Kṛṣṇa."

By engaging in unnecessary talks, we invite more trouble. Srila Prabhupada very nicely used to give the example of frog as to how by their croaking sound, they invite death. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.3.20 purport, His Divine Grace says, "There are hundreds and thousands of sources for distributing mundane news of the world, and people of the world are also receiving it. Similarly, the people of the world should be taught to hear the transcendental topics of the Lord, and the devotee of the Lord must speak loudly so that they can hear. The frogs loudly croak, with the result that they invite the snakes to eat them. The human tongue is especially given for chanting the Vedic hymns and not for croaking like frogs."

When we don't use our tongues for discussing Krishna katha, we only end up in speaking rubbish. His Divine Grace very wonderfully says in his lecture on verse 1.16.6 - "Talking means decreasing your duration of life. Talking. So why should you decrease your life unnecessarily? Every moment you have to utilize, "Whether it is used for Kṛṣṇa?" This is sādhana. This is sādhana, practice. Unnecessary talking, unnecessarily making enemies. Unnecessarily, "You are my subordinate; I am your master." Who is master? Everyone is subordinate to Kṛṣṇa. Nobody is master. Why you talk unnecessarily?"

All the above golden words spoken by Srila Prabhupada are so very relevant even now. If we really don't want to come back again and again and suffer in this material world, then it is very important for us to remember these wonderful instructions of Srila Prabhupada, Srila Gurudev and Srimad Bhagavatam and always think before we speak anything.

Krishna willing we shall meditate more on this topic in the subsequent offerings.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi
