Transcendental Ornaments - Part 2

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances.  All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Transcendental Ornaments" wherein we were trying to understand the qualities and nature of the Lord's ornaments. Now we shall see further.

On a particular day of every year in Srirangam (called as Panguni Uthiram festival), Mother Lakshmi and Lord Ranganatha would come together as a transcendental couple and bless all the devotees. On this auspicious day, Sripada Ramanujacharya composed a beautiful prayer called saranagati gadhyam in which he expressed his unconditional surrender at the lotus feet of the Divine couple. In that prayer, he first glorified the transcendental qualities and the form of Lord Narayana and Mother Lakshmi. And then, he recited the following sloka in glorification of the Lord’s ornaments.

svochita vividha vichitrānantaścarya nitya
niravadhya niratiśaya Sugandha niratiśaya sukhasparśa
niratiśaya aujawalya kirīṭa makuṭa cūdāvatamsa
makarakuṇḍala graiveyaka hāra keyūra kataka śrīvatsa
kaustubha muktadhāma Udarabandhana pītāmbara
kānchiguna nūpurAdhi aparimita divya bhūṣaṇā

O Lord, You are decorated with variety of ornaments which perfectly suit You (sva uchita),  which are made of different (vividha) with varieties in each kind (vichitra), endlessly amazing, eternal, blemishless, extraordinarily unique, sweet scented, remarkably tender and pleasing to touch, exceedingly brilliant, crown, head jewel, shark shaped earrings, necklace, chain, armlets, bangles, Srivatsa (mole like curly on his chest), kaustubha gem, pearl necklace, girdle, yellow attire, anklets which are limitless transcendental ornaments.

Acharya Ramanuja lists many qualities of the Lord’s ornaments and we will see each of them in some detail.

1. All kinds of ornaments befit the Lord perfectly (sva uchita):
Different living entities are attracted to different kinds of ornaments. Some people like earrings, some like necklace, some like bangles and some like waist belt etc., To attract different kinds of living entities, the Lord adorns Himself with varieties of ornaments. And we see in this world, every person's (men or women) personality is different and only some ornaments are suitable for them and enhance their beauty. For example, the waist belt is good only for people with a thin waist and those with a big belly, will not wear it since it will expose their obesity. So people select and buy jewels suited to their personality. But the Lord’s transcendental form can accommodate unlimited variety of ornaments and all will perfectly suit Him. Not only all kinds of ornaments will suit Him, but the Lord's form will enhance the beauty of all those ornaments. This is in contrast to the ornaments of this world because people decorate themselves with ornaments to enhance their beauty. But in case of the Lord, the ornaments become beautiful by adorning His transcendental form. Srimad Bhagavatam (3.2.12) says that the Lord is bhūṣaṇa-bhūṣaṇāṅgam (His form gives all beauty to the ornaments that decorate Him).

Krishna willing we shall see more on the unique qualities of the Lord’s ornaments in the ensuing offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Narahari Krishna das
Chennai.
