Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble pranams! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous mail transcribing Maharaj’s lecture on how the process of self-realization has been so much simplified for this age and why in spite of that simplification we have difficulties to take up the process.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has simplified the whole thing and requested us to simply chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. But we are not able to chant 16 names. To be very honest with you, we are struggling so much with our mind just to chant 16 rounds or even one round. In this age, those who chant 16 rounds very sincerely, I will like to touch their feet. They are the best. It is very difficult for us. It is not as easy as it looks.

We were in London. It was Rath Yatra time. We were moving about from shop to shop to collect donations for the Rath yatra. In London, there are corner shops selling newspapers and sweets. So we went to one shop. One young boy 18 or 20 years old was standing in the cash till. So we explained to him that Rath yatra is a nice festival. So we are just collecting some Lakshmi if we can. The boy was a bit more pious than his father. So he opened the till. The father was in the room behind the shop and he was watching television. Poor son was struggling with the till. So when the father heard that the till is being opened, father knew that without pressing the button that he was opening the till. He came rushing out. So the boy explained to his father that the brahmacharis have come to collect some donation for the Rath yatra. He flared up. He said that these people have no jobs. They are just moving from shop to shop. "I can also do that. It is a very easy job. Just put on saffron clothes and go." So I told the father, "You are saying that it is very easy to put on saffron clothes and take the bead bag in the hand and go from shop to shop. Isn’t it?" He said 'yes'. I told, "If it is so easy, then we have a spare saffron cloth pair in our car. So you please come with us now. You also accompany us and we will go and beg." He said, "No No …who will look after the shop?" Then I told, "You told it is very easy."

The thing is, it is not as easy as it looks. Just to carry the bead bag we are ashamed. We are ashamed that maybe someone will see us and think that we are devotees. Nobody sees you except yourself. That is definite. Nobody has time. They do not know what you have put on or whether your head is shaven. But we admire our combed hair and then Krishna becomes very angry. He takes out your hair, shaves you off and then you become bald. There is no need of shaving.

This is how we think that it is very easy. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu thought that it is very difficult for these people to chant the Mahamantra. So He told us to chant only 'Krishna' and in a nice way Mahaprabhu sings,

kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! he
kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! he
kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! rakṣa mām
kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! pāhi mām
rāma! rāghava! rāma! rāghava! rāma! rāghava! rakṣa mām
kṛṣṇa! keśava! kṛṣṇa! keśava! kṛṣṇa! keśava! pāhi mām

So we are settled at Krishna. He thought that this is nice. Just one word and it is very nicely said in the Vedas

kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇeti yo mām smarati nityaśah
jalam bhitvā yathā padma narakād api uddharāmy aham

Those who remember and chant the Holy name of Krishna always, I deliver them even from hell just like the lotus flower comes out of even muddy waters.

If you chant Krishna's names then you are not tired. You chant 'Elizabeth, Elizabeth', how long you can go on? Within five minutes you will be tired. If she pays you salary, then you may chant for some time. But again you will be completely tired. How long you can go on? Coca cola..coca cola..you can’t get anything. You can’t get a tin of coca-cola by chanting coca-cola. But if you chant Krishna.. Krishna.. you get Krishna. That is the difference. Coco cola is material. Elizabeth is material. That is why there is a difference between the name and the material body, whereas there is no difference between Krishna’s name and Krishna Himself. The invocation mantra in Isopanishad says

oṁ pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idaṁ pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate
pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam evāvaśiṣyate

The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance.

The concentrated powerful centre of existence is Krishna and from that complete whole so many complete units are coming out like our earth and it is complete in itself. Water is required for our life and it is supplied here. The whole planet is self-sufficient and because of our folly we are polluting everything. This is our sinful activity. But Krishna has given everything to us. This is pūrṇam udacyate. And whatever balance is complete again. In spiritual world, you should remember one plus one is equal to one and one minus one is also equal to one. There is no change. In material mathematics, one plus one is two and one minus one is zero. But the spiritual world is not like this. It is all complete whole. You cannot take anything out. You cannot put anything in. Whatever is, is completely perfect. That is Krishna’s knowledge and because Krishna includes the complete whole that is why by chanting Krishna’s names we are completely satisfied and as soon as you are satisfied, the miseries are completely mitigated. The miseries cannot touch you. If the hot plate is there, water cannot touch it. Water may fall, but because of the boiling heat of the plate, it cannot touch. As soon as it touches, it is evaporated. In the same way, miseries keep on coming, but they cannot touch us. This is the beauty of chanting these names.

With all this we are not coming to the names and Maharaj's explanation on the reasons for this shall be posted in the ensuing mail, Krishna willing.

Thank you very much.
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
