Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble pranams! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous mails transcribing Maharaj’s lecture on how the process of self-realization has been so much simplified for this age and why in spite of that simplification we have difficulties to take up the process. Maharaj insisted that we have to develop detachment from the material things since nothing belongs to us and also reduce our necessities of life and by reducing the necessities of life we are completely relieved of mental anguish and then we will be able to follow the instructions of Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada has given us dhotis to wear; he has given us very nice time to wake up early in the morning, very simple process to take rest also. Everything he has given. If we complicate our life, the decay of the body hurries up. The body which is too much looked after goes old very soon than the body which is roughly used. We do not care much. We take rest minimum possible, we get up for Mangalarati and we do the devotional service. Then that body, Krishna’s mercy may survive longer. It does not mean they do not die. If you want to be healthy, if you want to be wealthy, if you want to be wise, you have to go to bed early and get up early. These are a few hints just to start the devotional service.

As soon as we start, then our goal must be very clear to us. Caitanya Mahaprabhu insists that we must become like Gopis and be attached to Krishna. Then we must fix our goal what we want to do. Gopis sing very nice. It gives us the idea that after we decrease our necessities and after we increase our devotional activities then how it should be performed. They say in Srimad Bhagavatam 10.31.15

aṭati yad bhavān ahni kānanaṁ
truṭi yugāyate tvām apaśyatām
kuṭila-kuntalaṁ śrī-mukhaṁ ca te
jaḍa udīkṣatāṁ pakṣma-kṛd dṛśām

When You go off to the forest during the day, a tiny fraction of a second becomes like a millennium for us because we cannot see You. And even when we can eagerly look upon Your beautiful face, so lovely with its adornment of curly locks, our pleasure is hindered by our eyelids, which were fashioned by the foolish creator.

This is our destination. To reduce the necessities is not the goal of our existence, but it is needed to reach to the goal of our existence. Here the Gopis say, ‘atati yad bhavan ahni kaananam ‘– as soon as the day dawns You wander about and You are just gone behind the cows to graze the cows. We do not see You during the day and because of that, fraction of a second becomes long. Evening You come back and we want to see Your nice curly hair with which You look so beautiful, but Brahma is very cruel. He has created the eyelids so we have to blink and during that time we cannot see You. This is Gopi’s way. This you have to follow by decreasing the necessities, by making the life simple and the time which is saved because of this, every possible moment should be used in understanding Krishna through Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, through any of Srila Prabhupada's books. Not a single moment should go without this. Not even the time that takes to blink the eyes. This is Gopi’s way. So this is our destination. Caitanya Mahaprabhu advises, ramya kacid upasana vraja-vadhu-vargena va kalpita- What could be more wonderful than that worship conceived by the gopis?

You should perform devotional service like the Vraja vadhu. Uddhava went to give the knowledge to the gopis. Krishna sent Uddhava that you go and console them that I will come to see them. Uddhava went and he tried to explain that Krishna is coming to you some time. Do not be morose. Gopis taught him back. Gopis told who said Krishna is not with us? You do not know. Krishna is 24 hours with us. We are chanting His names, we are singing His pastimes. So Krishna is always with us. It is very nicely said in Vraja vasi language that Suresha, Ganesha, Dinesha, Mahesha, Sesha all of them are day and night singing the glories of the Lord but it is difficult for them to get His darshan. But the cowherd girls they just show Krishna a cup of buttermilk and He dances to take the buttermilk. This is pure love. Purified goodness will attract Krishna.

To reduce the material necessities is not enough. It is just the way, it clears the path to go to Krishna and as soon as you reduce your material necessities, whatever time you can save, every moment should be utilized in understanding the supreme truth. As it is, in kali yoga, our brains are completely useless to understand anything. But Srila Prabhupada is very merciful and he has given us everything in a very simple language and this should be our goal in short. So try to adjust your life and your activities in this way.

Maharaj explained what the Shastras instruct us in this regard and this concluding portion of the speech shall be posted in the next mail, Krishna willing.

Thank you very much,
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
