Patience is must to Progress in Bhakti - Part 2

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Patience is must to Progress in Bhakti" which is transcription of a nectarean lecture given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 11.7.12-16 in Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav dham Rajkot in the year 2006.

In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj that we must patiently follow the transcendental lifestyle prescribed by Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Now we shall hear further.

Maharaj:  Unless the person develops the patience, it is very difficult to walk on this path. So please remember this point that this is a lifestyle; devotional service is a lifestyle meant for 24 hours a day. If this style is followed sincerely day in and day out, throughout the life, at the end it won’t stop, but it will continue. Very nice point he has given, that all our material things they are forcefully cut off. So, if I am attracted to wealth, I am attracted to my wife, or children or house, they will be forcefully cut off. But devotional service or style will never be cut off. It continues to the next life. Fortunately, we may have human birth if the yoga is incomplete. And this is the point, very nice point you know.

(SB 11.7.14 Purport continuation) One can never achieve a permanent situation by mental speculation, and what to speak of by ordinary material sense gratification. By the methods of haṭha-yoga, karma-yoga, rāja-yoga, jñāna-yoga, etc., one does not actually awaken his propensity for rendering eternal loving service to the Personality of Godhead. Thus, one is bereft of the transcendental tastes of spiritual enjoyment. Sometimes the conditioned soul, disgusted by his failure to gratify his senses, bitterly decides to renounce the material world and merge into an impersonal, painless transcendence. But our actual happy situation is to render loving service at the lotus feet of the Personality of Godhead. All of the different yoga processes gradually lead one to love of Godhead, and it is Lord Kṛṣṇa’s aim to re-establish the conditioned souls in this happy position. Caitanya Mahāprabhu is making this perfection easily available through the chanting of the holy name of Kṛṣṇa, the supreme yoga process for this age.

His point is very clear.

tyāgo ’yaṁ duṣkaro bhūman kāmānāṁ viṣayātmabhiḥ
sutarāṁ tvayi sarvātmann abhaktair iti me matiḥ

My dear Lord, O Supreme Soul, for those whose minds are attached to sense gratification, and especially for those bereft of devotion unto You, such renunciation of material enjoyment is most difficult to perform. That is my opinion.(SB 11.7.15)

It’s very important verse you know. (Maharaj reads from the purport of 11.7.15) Those who are truly devoted to the Supreme Lord do not accept anything for their personal gratification but rather accept those things suitable to be offered in the Lord’s loving service.

This is very important. We people somehow or other got this knowledge. Now we have to realize this knowledge. We have accepted that the Supreme Lord is all in all. That’s why we have devoted to the Lord. ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate iti matvā bhajante māṁ. We have devoted ourselves. Now we have to change our habits that only we should accept anything for the service of the Lord and not for our personal sense gratification. And if you do like this really whether the world worships you or not, I don’t know, but you will be elevated from the material rut and eventually, Krishna willingwe will be eternally in His service. This is the point.

Krishna willing we will continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Uma Prathap
