Patience is must to Progress in Bhakti - Part 3

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Patience is must to Progress in Bhakti" which is transcription of a nectarean lecture given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 11.7.12-16 in Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav dham Rajkot in the year 2006.

In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj that

1. We must patiently follow the transcendental lifestyle prescribed by Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
2. Practising bhakti yoga alone awakens propensity to do loving devotional service unto Krishna.

Now we shall hear further.

Maharaj: (Continued to explain the translation of Srimad Bhagavatam verse 11.7.15)

My dear Lord, O Supreme Soul, for those whose minds are attached to sense gratification, and especially for those bereft of devotion unto You, such renunciation of material enjoyment is most difficult to perform. That is my opinion.

The corollary is that we are full of devotion, so we have accepted Him as the Lord. That’s why we are not attached to sense gratification at all. Otherwise it will be very difficult for us to get up early in the morning in this cold and get ready. Is it possible? Impossible. Impossible. And in the end they are sick. The houses are not the houses at all. In the Western world at least, the credit goes to you people, you are clean at least, if not anything else. And cleanliness is next to godliness. So don’t think you are not clean or you don’t know anything. That idea must be driven out of your mind.

You have already two qualities I have found out in the West are the following. That is, one is cleanliness and the other thing is very devoted to the work you are doing. Maybe you are doing the karmi’s job. But the job you are doing, you are doing with whole devotion. These two qualities are totally absent in India, thinking that they are devotees. And they are not devotees. Those who don’t follow these two things they are not devotees. They are in illusion that they are devotees. And they neglect cleanliness and they neglect their work also. and that is why the poverty is rampant. Cleanliness is completely absent. And poverty is there because if you don’t follow the instructions of the Lord you are going to have scarcity. This is how we are experiencing so much poverty. With all the knowledge at our disposal, realization is absent. And it is only Saint Prabhupad could unfold these things. Otherwise, no other saints have done it. So many saints, sages and gurus were there. But nobody had unfolded this point. This is the speciality of Prabhupad, that he has woken us up that please devotional service can never be inactive.

(Reading the purport of verse 11.7.15) Those who are truly devoted to the Supreme Lord do not accept anything for their personal gratification, but rather accept those things suitable to be offered in the Lord’s loving service. The word viṣayātmabhiḥ indicates those who desire material objects for their personal gratification instead of for the devotional service of the Lord. The minds of such materialistic persons are suitably disturbed, and it is virtually impossible for such persons to renounce material enjoyment. This is the opinion of Śrī Uddhava.

Krishna willing we will continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Uma Prathap
